Japanese scientist invents 'invisibility cloak'

http://www.ananova.com/images/web/42152.jpg

A Japanese scientist has developed a coat which appears to make the wearer invisible.

The illusion was part of a demonstration of optical camouflage technology at Tokyo University.

It is the brainchild of Professor Susumu Tachi who is in the early stage of research he hopes will eventually make camouflaged objects virtually transparent.

The photograph was taken through a viewfinder that uses a combination of moving images taken behind the wearer to give a transparent effect.

It's hoped the technology will be useful for surgeons frustrated their own hands and surgical tools can block their view of operations and pilots who wish cockpit floors were transparent for landings

A lot of bad can come from this too though. I just hope they don't get this technology for a few conveniences. In the wrong hands, this could be devastating.

This should be stopped immediately.

I want, I want, that looks so cool.

This is the same for so many other things !!
Nuclear was not supposed to make a bomb when Einsten was working on it...

Titusfied 2003-02-06 12:12 PM

Heh, and why do you think we are in the situation with a possible nuclear hallocaust right now?

That is exactly my point, thanks UN#!! ;) Before something catastrophic can occur from this invention, it should be throw out and never thought about again.... But of course that won't happen. :(

Dunnow hy the vidoe isnt working but....... what it shows is a guy with a Square thingy and he passes it in fron tof his head and u can seen whats behind him and stuff....then he gets on the suit....

civman2 2003-02-06 03:56 PM

wait a second.

Do you have to be looking through a special camera for this to work? That would be really useless...

The photograph was taken through a viewfinder that uses a combination of moving images taken behind the wearer to give a transparent effect.

Um.. does that mean that it's only transparent when using a viewfinder?

Knight Rider... your link to the video contains "..." therefore meaning the link is abbreviated... Repost the link making sure it is the exact link.

Yal watch this http://www.star.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp/proj...mages/oc-s.mpg

BlueCube 2003-02-08 11:23 AM

Okay, it's not really transparent.

There's a video camera filming the part behind the guy. There is also a projector putting the image from the first camera, onto the front of the object.

They showed this on TechTV..
