Antivirus

Well I recently uninstalled a site licensed copy of Symantec Endpoint due to its complete disregard that my computer is in fact not a government supercomputer. By that I mean it would take immense resources (100-150MB) just to run real time protection. I tried to fix it but never seemed to get anywhere but to a hotter desktop - I mean the top of my desk getting hot from the computer. Anyhow, now that it's gone my computer stays cooler, everything else runs faster, and my harddrive doesn't doesn't keep me awake in the middle of the night spinning. I was looking around for a new substitute and thought I'd ask here if anyone knows any good antivirus programs? Right now I'm sampling one called Avast.

avast is what i use with a scan once a week with malwarebytes

Well that lasted the better part of a couple of hours. I went to scan my computer and around 94% is slowed drastically and pretty much stopped. I paused the scan, restarted my computer only to find out it wouldn't fully load explorer.exe - so I booted it up in safe mode and uninstalled avast. Maybe it's not compatible with Windows 7

I use AVG for stuff like that. It doesn't work against the crazy stuff, like LOPs, though, unless you pay for your package, like me. If you pay, almost nothing gets through. I have heard alot about AVG being a rip-off, though.

Antivirus is a scam.

Have you tried speeding up Windows 7 yet? You can turn off the indexing feature and that alone will give you a somewhat noticeable difference in speed right away, along with heat. (Did it on my laptop after a few weeks of having Win 7 and is dramatically made a difference as my specs are not too far ahead of the bare minimum).

How so? I scan all the time, and I always get weird cookies from porn websites.

I actually have indexing disabled. I had a similar problem with vista I believe, and when I installed 7 it was the same deal. It really seems to be antivirus programs that slow my computer dramatically. It's a dual core 2.something GHz with 2 Gb of ram, and just an integrated graphics card. I thought maybe it could have been some of the windows 7 aero or whatever it's called using processor resources for calculations that would normally be offloaded onto a decent GPU. If I don't have an antivirus, however, my computer runs fast. Usually faster than my acceptability limit. Norton(and avant) seem to just completely bog down my system. Right now I have Norton back on here... I'm giving it another chance to integrate with windows 7 since they've now hopefully had time to work out the kinks. When I first installed it Windows 7 had just came out of the beta.
