Are grades really accurate?

Well.

I was thinking, about my D in math. I usually would have a B or an A. I understand the material, and if after every day of math, i was given a test about what we learned that day, i would get atleast 85-100%.

My grade is failing, because im lazy. I dont want to do my work, and i dont do it.

My math teacher isnt that strict, but he tells the truth.

I remember once, i didnt do my homework, so he says to me, "You had something better to do , right?" I told him.. "No, i just forgot", and he says " So, that means you had something better to do, right?" and i couldnt think. I told him i did. He asks "what was it?".. I told him " It was nothing"

That shows that my grade is only failing because 'nothing' as in saying ' doing nothing' makes me more excited, than doing math work. So, wheres the 'consipiricy' here?

Grades are a jip. They rob you. They rob you of your self-esteem, they rob you of your self-pride, and they rob you of friends. You can be smarter than hell in a subject, but have an F. becuase you dont like the subject. I think grades are inaccurate, because its just a fucking number. The only way they get kids like me to do my HW, is to threaten detentions. Yet, i still dont do my work. Why?

I told you, i'd rather do nothing, than do my work. How about you? Dont you feel somewhat the same way? I also think that college should be allowed to anyone, s'long as they have enough money to pay. SAT's, ABC's, its all the same.

This is just my rant, i dont even know if it fits under the category of Conspiricy. I just think there is a better way..

Up until like 6th grade, homework should be manditory. After that though, I think kids are old enough to know "hey, i have to study this to do well". I got b's + on almost every test I took (with the exception of english and spanish), but my overall grades were c's and d's because i saw homework as pointless busywork. It pissed me off to do it so I just did it hap hazardly.

I knew the subject, I saw that reading the same shit that I already knew would serve no point.

Btw, moved to gen con, I don't think the teachers are conspiring against us..

EDIT: this was before i even tried pot.

Grades aren't really based on how smart you are, they're more based on completion of work than anything. Think about it, if you don't turn something in it becomes a 0 which, in turn, brings down your grade. I am a very smart individual when it comes to school, but I don't feel the need to do all the bullshit work. School doesn't challenge me. I make straight A's without paying attention; there's an indication on how much the American (or atleast my corporation) Education system blows.

Vollstrecker 2005-03-09 11:24 PM

I feel that grades are more of a test of Work Ethic than actual mental competence.

I was ejected from the Seminar program in Junior High (highest tier of the GATE program, unless it's changed) for my lack of doing homework. I slept thru class, made high marks on tests/etc, but did no homework, and next to nothing for classwork.

As far as things go in the 'World After School', it IS your work ethic that matters. Grades are typically perceived to be something other than what they are, normally.

I've stated this before. Pot doesn't make people lazy, it just so happens that a lot of lazy people smoke pot.

hmm this thread seems to relate to me but I dont feel like responding with details =/

Can someone tell me again, because I forgot. Is everyone in America that goes to highschool on the same level of education? Meaning that there's just highschool which is the same for everyone, except for maybe a couple of classes you can choose to have?

Muldy 2005-03-10 11:38 AM

sometimes I like to dip my private parts into molten tar and then run down the street pretending to be an elephant.

No, there are different types of graduation diplomas. Example: At my school we have Core 40 or Academic Honors Diploma. Core 40 classes are regular classes (none of them advanced) and the Honors Diploma classes are almost all advanced. There are a certain number of credits you need in order to graduate with the diplomas. For Core 40 there are 40. For Honors it's 47 or 48, something like that.

With Honors, they expect more of you.

Muldy 2005-03-10 12:17 PM

you can't tell me what to do.

zonalon 2005-03-10 01:07 PM

School really doesn't matter; the only way you'll get anywhere in life is if you study the Torah and/or have a crooked nose and/or have a name that ends in stein/berg/witz (but you can always change that name).

kaos 2005-03-10 01:09 PM

Shut up noob, for all we know, you probably still get "checks" and "stars" on your report card.

undeadzombieguy 2005-03-10 01:24 PM

So can you still get into university to get a masters degree with just the basic highschool diploma or is college where you can get a bachelors degree your only option?

zonalon 2005-03-10 01:30 PM

If you're too lazy to even do homework, you must be fat.

Homework is so easy.

undeadzombieguy 2005-03-10 01:33 PM

Of course it is when you copy/paste everything.

Thanatos 2005-03-10 01:39 PM

I'm pretty sure you can still get a Master's with the basic diploma, it's going to be a lot harder though.

Ugh.. I'd probably kill myself. I can't stand really stupid people (or even smart people who act like dumbasses).

And about work ethic, that's exactly what grades are. Do you really think they give out measures of your "current level of intelligence" every semester? If you don't do the work, you're either really lazy or have no goals.

Sovereign 2005-03-10 06:35 PM

If grades are about work ethic, then why don't I get a report card that says "good effort", or "good ethics". You get a card with an A, B, C, D, or F. You can sit down and try as hard as you can and still not understand something. You can do the homework to the best of you abilities and still get a C or a B. If it was just a judge of work ethic, there shouldnt be ANY of that shit. If the teech sees that you put effort into it, regardless of its right or not, it should be enough to get a "pass".

But it's not. You can try your hardest on a math assignment, get a few problems wrong, and get a C. It IS to judge how well you know the subject, not work ethic.

D3V 2005-03-10 06:59 PM

I used to always get sent to the office because of my teacher accusing me that I was cheating, she would say that if she couldn't do it in her head, then neither could I, fucking communist whore who doesn't understand algebra isn't my problem.

But to the subject, Grades in grade school are not accurate, maybe to Work Ethic as Voll said, but actual mental ability are judged on statewide tests. Not until you get to college will you be graded on your intellegence (unless you play a sport for the school, then your set :))

Lenny 2005-03-11 07:33 AM

To carry on undeadzombieguy's point...what types of schools are there??? Secondary school wise...are they all comprehensives?? Or are there Grammar schools as well???

Here we got Grammar Schools, then the schools that get the pupils that took the 11+ (test) to get into the Grammar but failed, and then we got the comprehensives which contain most of the idiots that didn't take the 11+...

What about America?? Or...Hungary (is that where you are UZG??)???

You are clearly missing the point. School is not about finding the best way to teach kids and make them learn more. Its about comforming. End of story

I got a 1490 on the SAT and on the new one I probably got about a 2350, since the writing section was added on. I have the ability to do well in school, however I don't. For example, in Biology, I have a 95 test average.... and a 75 in the class. Why? I havent turned a single fucking assignment. Hahahaha. I am so sweet. Grades don't mean shit, and they don't help you succeed.

KagomJack 2005-03-11 07:47 PM

grades in school don't reflect me one bit. I do very well on tests, but I'm so goddamn lazy and don't do a lot of homework. Well...some classe I do put an effort in (like English)

ask_rabber 2005-03-12 01:18 AM

You are all clearly way too cool for school.

Grav 2005-03-12 09:32 AM

Yeah, bra.

zonalon 2005-03-12 09:37 AM

That's why you lazy bastards aren't going to become big CEO's like me. First of all, you aren't Jewish, second of all, you're lazy, and third of all, colleges look at grades (and what your last name is).

Grav 2005-03-12 09:44 AM

So wait, you're Jewish?

Really? Because my family is not Jewish, yet my Grandfather, who grew up extremely poor, started the company he now is the CEO of himself. My father started working there when it was a no-name company in an 800sq.ft. office in the back of a strip mall. Now, they are multi-millionares many times over. And no, there are no Jews who helped them out. They did it all through their blood sweat and tears. The startup money was supplied exclusively by my grandfather and his business partners (none of whom were Jewish), and they suceeded. So I think that proves you wrong right there.

And yah, by saying that someone isn't going to become a big CEO like you, and then the first reason you give is that they are not Jewish, you implied that you yourself are Jewish. Which would make you a hypocrite. Which would make you even more irritating.
