Lenny, I'm still a novice in this area, from what I gather 3DS Max is one of the better introductory programs, but a lot of studios actually use Maya (I know Blizzard and Bungie do). The basic modelling is loosely comparable to Autodesk's other products like AutoCAD, although there are tons of features in AutoCAD that I wish were in Max.
