[13:23] Lenny: Everyone should download one of the monkeys your favourite Sup Mod lovingly raised: http://files.filefront.com/Virtual+M.../fileinfo.html
[13:23] Lenny: They're a bit rough around the edges, but a bit of TLC will sort them right out. =)
[13:23] Lenny: As will a session of cleaning up the code!

[15:26] Lenny: Monkey 1.0 took three hours to generate 1,000,000 random characters.
[15:26] Lenny: Monkey 1.5 has just generated 1,000,000 random characters in 20 seconds.
[15:27] Lenny: Code optimisation ftw?

[17:16] Goodlookinguy: You don't unzip it, you run it through java.
[17:16] Goodlookinguy: Like an exe file.

[17:16] Lenny: It's a JAR file because it's in Java... what's lame about that? It's the language we're being 'taught' at Uni, so it's the language I'm going to write in.
[17:16] Goodlookinguy: Except you don't run exes through Java.
[17:17] Goodlookinguy: JAR is lame
[17:17] Goodlookinguy: Learn a real language.
[17:17] Goodlookinguy: ASM, C, C++, C#!

[17:38] Lenny: There's no point me learning to code in C++ when the language I'm marked on at Uni is Java.
[17:38] Lenny: Quite simply.
[17:39] Lenny: What I'm doing at the moment can be used as my personal project for this year.
[17:45] Lenny: Anyone, whilst I'm on the subject, I've cracked my problem - 1,000,000 characters can be generated every 0.4s at a steady rate for as long as desired. 1,000,000,000 characters, for example, takes exactly 6' 40" - which just so happens to be exactly 1000 times longer than 1,000,000 characters.
[17:45] Lenny: Boo yah!
[17:46] Lenny: The program, btw, is my take on the famous thought experiment - infinite monkeys at infinite typewriters.
[17:47] Lenny: It's in the very early stages at the moment, so all it does is generate characters and check the generated string against a text document dictionary containing 58000 words.
[17:47] Lenny: But it's getting there, slowly. =)

[18:33] Lenny: it'll take 14 minutes and 18 or 19 seconds to generate, and then hours to compare.
[18:34] Lenny: Tomorrow I'm going to optimise the comparison code.
[18:34] Lenny: It's quite pointless generating 1000000 characters in 0.4s if it takes over a minute to go through the string with the dictionary.
