[11:39] Chruser: It barely manages to connect to the university (circa 150 yards away) with its built-in antenna. I'm not sure about the exact positioning of their sources of singals, but it's sensitive enough to be completely interrupted if I move the wireless router .3 inches.

[11:41] Chruser: I couldn't bring it to Umeå. I have a cantenna and a 24 dBi parabolic grid antenna.

[11:44] Chruser: If I could fit aluminium foil on it without significant surface abrasions, its gain would likely increase to >30 dBi, but it seems like too large of a project.

[11:45] Chruser: I found a 37 dBi dish on eBay for $600, but it would have cost over $1300 to have it shipped as freight cargo to Sweden.

[11:45] WetWired: Actually, antennas like that are meant to be open;covering it probably wouldn't improve it, much if at all

[11:47] Chruser: Is its derivation from a round, parabolic shape that significant? Increasing the surface area of a conventional parabolic shape antenna which consists of a mesh grid would improve its gain.

[11:48] Chruser: (E.g. by applying an even surface of aluminium foil)

[11:52] Chruser: The Swedish radiation protection authority does not specify legal limits for antenna gain, but pointning a 37 dBi antenna in the path of others would likely make them unhappy.
