Skyrim was great, but I accidentally the Mages College.

Asamin
2012-03-22, 08:17 PM
That's ok. I once accidentally all of whiterun. And I don't mean the city. I mean the hold. I swear, I was just trying to get 100 pick pocketing.

Skurai
2012-03-22, 09:13 PM
Well, for me it was Whiterun, but before I had permission to get in the College.
There was a dragon. I used Fus-Ro-Dah, and... well... A guard got in the way.
Kinda B.S., really.

Asamin
2012-03-22, 11:37 PM
Most of the times I've killed a guard I manage to get all the witnesses or just pay it off (I'm in the thieve's guild). My annoying story was when I got fined for punching a kid that was beating up another kid. They didn't fine the kids!

I just glitched Oghma Infinium and got 100 on all my Skills and jumped from level 21 to level 80.

Seems kind of boring now.

Asamin
2012-03-23, 06:47 PM
How did you manage that? I'm level 52 and have run out of things to do so some glitch like that could be fun to me.

kaos
2012-03-23, 07:40 PM
1. Get Oghma Infinium, but don't read it.

2. Buy a house, then buy the alchemy set for the house

3. Click Activate Bookshelf, Go down to Books, Oghma Infinium, Read. Don't Exit out of the menu, click Store on the book to store it in the bookshelf. Exit the Bookshelf menu.

4. Repeat step 4.

5. ?????

6. Profit.

I just mastered the ways of the assassin and of enchanting. I'm only level 45, but everything is a breeze, now.
I can slip by entire dungeons unnoticed (unless I have a follower).
I can kill bosses with a single attack.
Even if I do get found out, my armor is awesome and I can deal with them at my leisure.

kaos
2012-03-23, 09:07 PM
I'm level 100 Sneak, added a point to silence, and yet people can still detect me if I'm walking around normally. I thought it would make it so running/walking is undetectable :/.

Asamin
2012-03-23, 09:25 PM
I have 100 sneak and a few points into the perks. I also have the Nightengale armor which makes it harder to detect me. I slip past most things if I try to. That or I wear my super enchanted Dragonscale armor. Each sword is doing 132 damage. Everything is at my leisure.

Also, the game I'm playing currently is Escape Velocity Nova. I'm so happy they made the last one for windows too. I would cry if I couldn't play this game.

kaos
2012-03-23, 09:54 PM
Yeah, kills are pretty simple now and I'm only playing to finish the story. Can't till 5/15. :D

WetWired

The silence perk only effects movement sound. If they see you, you're still in trouble. Also, you have to be sneaking to not be seen; otherwise, you're not actively disguising your movement. Even when you're sneaking, there's run and walk modes; this is what the perk refers to.

Here's my equipment:

Glass Helmet (Flawless). 60 AC. +40 Lockpicking. +25 Illusion
Necklace. 0 AC. +40 Sneak. +40 One Handed
Glass Armor (Flawless). 136 AC. +25 Light Armor. +62 Magic Regen
Glass Gauntlets (Flawless). 48 AC. +40 Sneak. +40 One Handed
Ring. 0 AC. +40 Sneak. +40 One Handed
Glass Boots (Flawless). 48 AC. +40 Sneak. +1? Muffle

Glass Shield (Flawless). 56 AC. +20 Magic Resist. +37 Shock Resist.
Dragonbane (Legendary). 120 Dmg.

Ebony Dagger (Flawless). 41 Dmg.

Including the sign of The Lord and natural resists, I have 398 AC (above the armor cap) and 70% magic resist

Asamin
2012-03-24, 01:35 PM
At some point I'll go in and find exactly what everything is. But all my gear is enchanted to boost one handed damage except my helm which is archery and my body which gives +12 to light armor skill. Pretty much everything else has 21% to one handed damage and I'm not gonna upgrade it till I have 100 enchanting and the first perk all the way up.

kaos

Grab a shitload of Fortify Smithing potions and make 600 Damage swords and 1500+ Armor like I did xP

Asamin
2012-03-25, 09:59 AM
Well there's a AC cap so a 1500 ac armor won't do any better than a lower one. Just your numbers look bigger. Damage wise? I don't need it. I can sneak up on a dragon priest and one hit him.

Asamin
2012-03-25, 02:42 PM
Lets move all Skyrim related discussion here.

Continuing what I was saying:
Physical damage reduction is capped at 80%. If you are wearing all four pieces of armor, this occurs at 567 displayed armor rating.

Therefore, having a plate armor with 1500 AR is pointless. The article does go on to say that there is a possibility of reducing damage to 0 with 100 block and a shield.

Thank you for the full move and the rename. Much better name IMO

WetWired

Hmm. I could swear it was under 400 AC. Regardless, I'm terribly OP as it is.

I just made a Breton which I'm going to take the way of the mage, he's level 7 or so now and not having much trouble. I can't say that playing him is as easy as my thief character that had 50 skill points in archery nearly from the start of the game and maxed pickpocketing and sneak almost without trying.

Asamin
2012-03-26, 12:49 PM
Thief is the easiest type of character to play. I have a heavy armor guy who wasn't really that easy to play till late game

!King_Amazon!
2012-03-26, 01:05 PM
I would agree with thief being the easiest type to play. I found the gameplay to be pretty tedious though. I enjoyed it at first, but going so slowly through dungeons and such isn't very fun. On my mage, I'm barely ever sneaking and just running through blasting shit. I get into hairy situations easier, but I also have lots of tricks to fix them and I'm taking at least half as long to do dungeons as I did on my thief. At this point, the only time consuming part of dungeon crawls is gathering all of the gear to sell, and taking it to a vendor. On my first play through I had to pay a lot of attention to what I was picking up because my bags would fill so fast with garbage, but now I pick up pretty much anything that is worth more than 2 gold per 1 unit weight. It means that I occasionally have to stop in the middle of a dungeon to fast travel and sell stuff, but it also means I'm making lots of money, and it's legit money instead of having to steal stuff and use a fence.

Overall I'm enjoying the new character, though it isn't the typical style of character I would play. I think once I get a decent follower I'll be good to go. I'm headed to see the Graybeards right now, and then I'll probably head to the mage college in Winterhold. If anyone knows of any half decent followers along the way, let me know. I know a few really good followers, but I want to wait to get them until I'm higher level so they aren't garbage. A mediocre follower would be fine at this point I think.

Asamin
2012-03-26, 01:50 PM
There was a quest I did. I believe it was a daedric prince quest that had an amazing mage follower as the reward..... I'll try to pin it down for you.

2012-03-26, 02:06 PM
Sounds like you are talking about the Azura's Star quest where you can get Aranea Ienith at the end. She's one of the ones I'm saving for when I'm higher level. I suppose I could use the console to fix her level as I level up since I'm playing the PC version, but that sounds annoying. Oh well, if I'm going to the mage college then I may end up causing her to load anyway. I'm not sure how far you have to stay away from an NPC before the game loads them, but at that point her level becomes fixed at whatever level I am at and the only way that I know of to fix the bug is with the console. She is definitely a badass, though. On my thief character she is my follower and I've seen her regularly take on dragons by herself.

Asamin
2012-03-26, 02:39 PM
Yeah... I was a loser and went with the black star so that I could enchant forever.

WetWired
2012-03-26, 07:36 PM
I actually kind of enjoyed the tension of the stealth play at first, and by the end stealth became amazingly quick. 95% of dungeons I can basicly run (while sneaking) straight to the end without killing anyone. If I'm more careful, I can stab everything in the face on my way to the end; this also has the advantage of being able to un-sneak and sprint if I need to backtrack.

My character was originally supposed to be a mage; I started sneaking everywhere because I was getting owned, and it kind of snowballed. I think the problem was I was getting useless skills in random stuff.

kaos
2012-03-26, 09:15 PM
By running you mean rolling? That's all I can do so far lol.

Asamin
2012-03-27, 05:15 AM
I never got that perk. I should most likely do that next time I go through a Skyrim phase.

WetWired
2012-03-27, 11:17 AM
By running, I mean not walking. The caps lock key toggles running and walking. Yes, it makes a difference on detection. I also can usually roll while sneaking without being detected, but if you're not being terribly carefull, sneak running is pretty fast. How much you're carrying also effects your actual movement speed, though it doesn't effect detection.

Asamin
2012-03-27, 11:28 AM
At this point I just run through and kill everything in like 2 hits.

!King_Amazon!
2012-03-27, 01:09 PM
Yeah I have to say that I enjoy the mage tactic of running through and melting faces. It's pretty rare that I run into something that actually gives me a challenge, and I've got a decent stock of potions to handle them. The only time my character has died was when I was messing around fighting guards. I came close on the first dragon you have to fight in Whiterun, but that was only because I decided to go toe-to-toe with him and see what happened. I literally stood in his breath taking damage while killing him at the end, and just barely took him down.

Asamin
2012-03-27, 01:12 PM
That's intriguing. I might have to try the magic angle next then.

Skurai

A fun thing to do is, during the tutorial mission, when you're supposed to snipe the bear, keep ducking, sneak behind the tutorial character, and attack him. Any method you want, magic, knives, swords, whatever.
Sneak skyrockets like fuck, and whatever you're attacking with launches up, too. Just don't move too much or the bear will get upset. I was level 17, uber thief by the time I left that cave.

Asamin

I don't know if it's fast on PC but on PS3 it's terrible. I try to avoid as many buildings as I can.

You can utilize this method even after the "tutorial mission". You just have to go to his house.

Oh reeeeeeeaaaaaally?
I assume you can also do this with Lydia, or anyone of the sort.

My first (and favorite) character is a Redguard who focused on Light Armor, Alchemy, and Two-Handed swords. It got to the point where I could one-shot dragons with a single swing. Armor isn't as strong as Heavy, but looking at the perks, Light Armor is the only good Armor.

kaos
2012-03-28, 03:15 PM
Heavy armor with that one skill that makes it weigh nothing, ftw.

My goal right now is to get the Daedric armor set and walk around like a bawss, mace-slappin' thy hoez left nd right. Bitch Betta have my gold pieces.

Skurai
2012-03-28, 07:33 PM
Go between the two trees, and tell me if you'd rather have Light or Heavy. I honestly don't care either way, but my buds all say Light had a better tree.
And it got the same weightless buff as Heavy.

Asamin

I am amused by the fact that you bothered to make a picture for that.

On topic, I like light armor way better. While Daedric armor does make you look like a boss, so does the Nightengale armor. Now that I went a looked at the trees, I have to agree that the light armor skill tree is way better. If you go heavy, you trade out stamina regen and damage avoid for less fall damage (which you shouldn't be taking anyways), less stagger which, face it, in the late game you just destroy everything before it can hit you, and reflected damage. I much prefer the light armor.

WetWired
2012-03-28, 08:11 PM
There's a shout to prevent fall damage, and I think you get it in the course of doing the main questline. Spending a perk seems like a waste.

The Nightengale armor does look awesome, and if you refine it, it has pretty good stats, but glass ended up even better, and there's a dragon one even better than that. TBH, full glass armor does give off the "I'm badass" vibe. The rediculous enchants I put on mine to back it up don't hurt.

I think the real thing to consider is that the heavy armor tree requires 3 extra perks spent to get full damage resistance and free movement.

Asamin
2012-03-28, 09:11 PM
Plus, all the heavy armor is more expensive to make.... oh wait, that's right, money isn't an issue. Nvm. With the for-mentioned AR cap it's almost pointless to have heavy armor in the end game. Daedric armor is insane to try to get until later in the game and it's really hard to farm Daedra hearts. The best light armor is made from dragons which are absurdly common. So even in rarity Light is way better.

Skurai
2012-03-29, 07:49 AM
My only complaint is that the enemies became incredibly boring after a while. I mean, sure, knights, wild animals, whatever, but a good 90% of the monsters were Draugers or Drauger variations. They could have really done something about that.

Asamin
2012-03-29, 07:57 AM
That is the exact reason why I can't play Skyrim to much. My only reprieve is when I find a dungeon with a dragon priest. That is an interesting fight. One of the only times I actually need to use a shout other than Dragonrend.

!King_Amazon!
2012-03-29, 11:49 AM
I just fought Falmer and Chaurus for the first time last night, and it was actually fairly challenging. I also made it to the Graybeards and joined the mage college.

Asamin
2012-03-29, 11:55 AM
By the time I got to the falmer, I could sneak past all of them since they're blind.

!King_Amazon!
2012-03-29, 12:03 PM
I still haven't really been bothering with sneaking, and I kill everything I see in an attempt to level my magic skills. I didn't have any major issues with the Falmer/Chaurus, but I did die once when I got swarmed. I basically just kited them through the dungeon and took them down that way.

I had to fight a troll and an ice troll on the way up the 7000 steps and had to use the same tactic. Sprint away, turn around and blast face for a few seconds, sprint away...etc.

Asamin
2012-03-29, 12:09 PM
I hate fighting that way. I feel like I'm cheating.

!King_Amazon!
2012-03-29, 12:13 PM
I don't feel that way at all. Not only will I kite to kill things, but I'll abuse terrain too. I see no issues with it, it's exactly what I would do were I actually in the game and my life were on the line. I did the same thing on my thief with her bow at times, especially when I had to kill two giants at once.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I also raided a bandit camp that was full of sissies that died in 1-2 seconds, and I found some fort that had been taken over by mages. That was actually a pretty fun time, though I kind of wish I had had a ward spell at that point. I made some good money clearing that place out, lots of soul gems and potions and enchanted items and such.

Skurai
2012-03-29, 01:17 PM
Using the terrain to your advantage should be a must in any game, IMO.
My original mission was the gather all shouts, so I ended fighting a lot of Dragon Priests, at least four. Haven't played in a long time, though.

!King_Amazon!
2012-03-29, 01:19 PM
Exploiting terrain can certainly take away from the experience, though. I mean, if it takes me 30 shots from my bow to kill a giant and the only way I can kill them is by exploiting terrain, it does start to feel very much like cheating.

On my mage, it tends to be more just strafing and kiting. I've gotten very good at avoiding both melee and ranged attacks by strafing and sometimes jumping. Other than that, I'll use trees or other obstacles to my advantage when I'm leading enemies around. I've only actually exploited terrain once, and that was with a troll I could have just as easily killed face to face. At the time, I was on some rocks above the guy, and saw a rock close enough for me to jump down to but far enough away that he couldn't attack me, and roasted him like that.

Skurai
2012-03-29, 01:21 PM
Well that's a bit different, I mean... they could at least learn how to jump over things. I never really used bow, very often.

Asamin
2012-03-29, 04:39 PM
When I use a bow it's generally in a situation where I won't have to exploit any terrain because I am OHKOing whoever I shoot.

I'm slowly gathering all the shouts. I need to do some more quests to unlock the rest of them though.

WetWired
2012-03-29, 07:41 PM
I mostly use my bow to distract NPCs, though I haven't had much need of that recently.

Asamin

I use it to get my souls for enchanting. It's enchanted with the soul capture at within 1 second.

Skurai
2012-03-30, 07:10 AM
I have three swords - all the same type, so same average damage output.
A fire, an absorbing health and a soul trapper. So for the most part soul trapping is just part of the fight.

WetWired
2012-03-30, 07:02 PM
I used to do dual daggers, one enchanted with soul trap, but then I found that I was filling my good gems with crap souls. At that point I started having a separate weapon for that.

Asamin
2012-03-30, 08:13 PM
That's the point of the bow. I just snipe from afar and get a grater soul.

Skurai
2012-04-03, 04:20 PM
I never really enchanted anything until way late, like 30+, so my gems were pretty fine however they were, regardless. I didn't care.

Asamin
2012-04-03, 08:29 PM
Pretty much the same here. I didn't start enchanting until the endgame. Level 50 actually. I was just looking for another skill to get high up.
