View Full Version : Possible Pandemic in the Works

GENEVA – An outbreak of swine flu in Mexico and the United States is a quickly evolving situation that has "pandemic potential," the head of the World Health Organization said Saturday before an emergency meeting of flu experts.
WHO Director-General Margaret Chan said the North American outbreak of a never-before-seen virus was a very serious situation.
She called Saturday's emergency meeting to consider declaring an international public health emergency over the outbreak, which is believed to have killed dozens of people in Mexico and sickened at least eight in the U.S.
The experts are also expected to recommend whether WHO should raise its pandemic alert to a higher level.
At least 62 people have died from severe pneumonia caused by a flu-like illness in Mexico, according to WHO. Some of those who died are confirmed to have a unique version of the A/H1N1 flu virus that is a combination of bird, pig and human viruses.
Mexico has closed schools, museums, libraries and theaters in a bid to contain the outbreak, which may have sickened about 1,000 people there.
"The situation is evolving quickly," Chan said at a telephone news conference in Geneva. "A new disease is by definition poorly understood.
"In the assessment of WHO, this is a serious situation which must be watched very closely."
"This is an animal strain of the H1N1 virus, and it has pandemic potential because it is infecting people," Chan said.
"However, we cannot say, on the basis of currently available laboratory, epidemiological and clinical evidence, whether or not it will indeed cause a pandemic," she added.
It is the first time Chan has convened such a crisis panel since the procedure was created almost two years ago, spokesman Gregory Hartl said.
The committee may decide Saturday that the outbreak constitutes a public health emergency, and if so, whether WHO should consider measures including travel advisories, trade restrictions and border closures.
The global body's flu pandemic alert level is now set to phase three — meaning there is no or very limited risk of a new virus spreading from human to human.
The committee "will be asked, 'should we raise the alert level to phase four or phase five,' depending on their appreciation of how far the virus has spread," Hartl said.
An increased alert level was considered likely, as initial evidence from the outbreak in Mexico indicates the virus has spread between people. Hartl said, however, that a decision would not be made Saturday.
It's already in the New York City school system and in the Southwestern U.S. Everything seems to indicate that it is jumping from human-to-human effectively. We might have border closures, interstate travel restrictions from cali, NY, and TX, and a lot of goodies soon. If you want surgical masks, you better get them now.
Oh yea, by the way, this particular strain kills healthy young adults more than any other age group. Good luck everyone!

If your immune system is weak (but not like crazy, HIV weak), you stand a better chance of surviving it than healthy people. That's what makes these strains of the flu so rough; they kill healthy young adults more so than old/weak folks.

EVERYBODY PANDEMIC!!!
not
When the solution to the 'pandemic' is to wash your hands and use common sense (avoid sick people) you know there is nothing to worry about. The media plays into the stupidity of the common folk, and are making a huge story out of nothing too major.
It's odd how when the Swine Flu kills a handful of Mexicans everyone freaks out and is worried about it spreading etc, but there have been thousands killed in this current drug war they are engaged in, and yet, nobody seems to give a rats ass about that.

The pandemic alert has been upgraded to level 5. This shows that a pandemic is imminent. The virus is quickly mutating, and although in Mexico it's kill rate isn't in the double digits, it is highly unstable and could become like the Avian Influenza from Asia. That influenza had around a 50% kill rate, from figures I just saw. This isn't much to be joking about. This is one of the largest threats to humanity in a while. It's out of the bag.
You think it's still really serious? After you take the meds and your body fights it off once you'll be cured for life from the specific strain. Like you say though, it's pretty rough that it keeps mutating though. I wouldn't be too worried, especially living in such a warm climate where it's hard for the Flu to hang around for a while.

The A/H1N1 subtype also caused the Spanish flu, which "killed killed some 50 million to 100 million people worldwide over about a year in 1918 and 1919."[1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Influenza_A_virus_subtype_H1N1)]. Not to be an alarmist or anything, but FUCK, WE'RE ALL DEAD!
Actually, since only one person has died outside Mexico so far, it may not even be as bad as more common strains of influenza.
As the CDC website states:
"Each flu season is unique, but it is estimated that, on average, approximately 5% to 20% of U.S. residents get the flu, and more than 200,000 persons are hospitalized for flu-related complications each year. About 36,000 Americans die on average per year from the complications of flu."[2 (http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/qa/disease.htm)]

What about Swedes?
What about Swedes?
They don't eat processed foods; therefourth, they cannot be harmed by illnesses. They live forever.
Yeah, but like you mentioned this strain so far has not been as powerful as the spanish flu. Even with that said, the transferred from 'mexico' recent swine flu has not resulted in any deaths either.
Chruser

Between 2000 and 4500 Swedes die every from Influenza-related complications, which means that the Influenza mortality rate is approximately three times higher here than in the United States.

That same Spanish Flu would probably hardly be a bother these days. In 1918 and 1919 our medical technology was pretty limited compared to today.

Well, 36,000/300,000,000=very small percentage. If even one out of a hundred infected dies, it's more severe than the normal one it seems. Mexico has had 160 deaths out of 2,498 proven sick with it. That's right over 6.4%. Granted, I doubt it'll have that sort of kill rate in the U.S. But in 3rd world nations I'd suspect it could be fairly consistant. I would suspect at least 3 billion people live in the third world. 6.4% x 3 billion = 192 million people. That's only if 6.4% of less than half the world's population were to die. Seeing as there's probably tons of undiagnosed cases, this scenario may be a bit too extreme. But it may not be too, as more may die. We'll see.
The vaccines are going to take many months to develop by the way, and this pandemic would probably already have ran its course through Mexico and the U.S. by then, i suspect. Any damage that's going to be done very well might be done by then.

I was talking last night with some of the family about the swine flu, and we were talking about it. Basically agree with everything you're saying. I was suggesting that if Africa were to be hit pretty severly, or even China/Japan, a higher congestive area that may not have as good rapid response as our country might have, there could be serious conditions and possibly kill more people. But I doubt it will.

My favourite paragraph from an article about London being quarantined because of a new strain (H1Z1):
After death, this virus is able to restart the heart of it’s victim for up to two hours after the initial demise of the person where the individual behaves in extremely violent ways from what is believe to be a combination of brain damage and a chemical released into blood during “resurrection.”
