View Full Version : Word evolution

I found this on another forum where it has survived almost 600 iterations so far. I figure we can outperform them. Here are the rules of the game:
You start off with a word (which I'll supply), and then you have to transform it. You can do so by four methods:
1) Rearranging the letters, e.g. desserts => stressed
2) Adding a letter, e.g. floor => floors
3) Taking away a letter, e.g. melt => met
4) Switching one letter for another, e.g. house => horse
You are not allowed to do 2, 3, or 4 at the same time, but you can do 1 in conjunction with either of the remaining three options.
The first person will transform my word, then the person after that will transform the previous person's word, and so on.
First word:
sneak
ill take the easiest option and go with
Snake.

Hey Chruser, does this rule, "4) Switching letters, e.g. house => horse," mean that if I had the word dawn that I could switch it to dick since it's the same amount of letters. Or did you mean that you could only switch one letter.

Only one for another. Otherwise, it would have been pointless to state that #1 can be used in conjunction with #4, as #4 would then supplant the transformations of #1. But I'll edit the post anyway for extra clarity.

No, both darndest and damndest are not words. People use them as if that's how you spell them because they don't know any better. Both have an e before the second d. Don't use sources that only prove my point.

"Darndest" has nothing to do with this. Merriam-Webster, OED and dictionary.com state that both "Damndest" and "Damnedest" are valid words. Please show me a source that proves that "damndest" isn't a valid word.
On another note, my fiber connection died a few days ago, so I have to use my cellphone until further notice.

If that happens, we will start over in a new thread.
New rule: If anyone detects an invalid word from now on that is not part of any significant dictionary (such as the Oxford English Dictionary or a Merriam-Webster dictionary), the post containing the invalid word, along with all subsequent replies to it will be soft deleted.
If the word can be proven valid within three days of the deletion (and is not annoyingly obscure like the 189,819-letter chemical name for titin or another protein that isn't in any dictionaries, anyway (not that this thread is likely to live long enough for us to get there, even if possible)), the chain will be restored and diverging posts will be deleted or merged if possible.
