View Full Version : The Life and Adventures of Lenny, a Smurf.

I'm posting this as a Smurf. That's right, a real life smurf. A real life, naked smurf, because I've only got blue jeans and no white pants. Pillow case as a hat, mask as a... mask, blue clothes for the body, and my white trainers (pictures will eventually follow).

The reason? Noah's Ark Bop! It was a Freshers' party thrown by the college in the Junior Common Room, and it was fantastic. Coke is free this week (and 40p/69-i-don't-have-a-cents-button a pint for the rest of the year), company is always at hand, and drinking games can be fun even when you're not drinking!

I'm living on a corridor with fifteen other people, all of whom are sound as a pound, and we all went to the bop together and had great fun in the middle of the bar playing Slaps, Twenty-One and I Have Never.... After that I bumped into someone I know from my old school and had a chat, and then I went and played Pool with the guy two doors down.

University life is really fantastic. Sure, I don't go out clubbing with everyone (I find clubs suffocating), and I don't drink (coke is my limit), but I'm still having the time of my life. The atmosphere is just fantastic, everyone speaks to everyone else, and I couldn't have picked a better bit of the country to come to - not a more beautiful place, at least.

I'm off to bed in a few minutes as I only got four hours sleep last night, and tomorrow I think I'm meeting up with some friends in other years.

Anyway, I just thought I'd give an update on my life, seeing as I've never really done it and that it seems like the thing to do when you reach a certain activity.

Oh, and I met a girl at breakfast (shock horror!!). Well, not true... she initiated the conversation (I'm terrible with small talk, I must admit), so in reality she really met me. Either way, she's a nice girl. A year older and in a relationship, but we're friends. :)

Lenny
2008-10-06, 05:06 PM
So do I!!!

I honestly haven't seen myself properly. For all I know, I looked a right berk. :p I'll tell you this for free, though, I couldn't see at all. I had two tiny little eye holes, and no peripheral vision. Even now I think I'm looking down a tunnel.

Lenny

Fantastic mask, badly made. :p I had an hour to throw together a costume of an animal that was on Noah's Ark. Lion was done, I didn't have the clothes to be the Hair Bear Bunch, but I had everything to be a smurf (and don't you tell me that smurfs weren't on the Ark! Quote to me the bit of the bible states, "And God said to Noah, 'Thou shalt not transport Smurfs, lest thou be thrown into the fiery pits of doooooom!'"), so that's what I went as.

I've never seen such a fantastic display of DIY Costume making in my life as I did on the corridor tonight!

VD: She's about my height, curly, thin black hair, specs, pretty. And she digs my sense of humour, which is always a nice thing. :)

Lucky ass. No girls like my sense of humor. That is most likely cuz I have a New York humor and I am in PA.

Asi, they dig your sense of humor. They dig it all the way to the bedroom, wooo.
Anyways, nice fishing Lenny catching yourself a nice girl to talk to.
You hoping it will get to the next level?

She's in a relationship, if she leaves her current one just to be with Lenny, then she wouldn't be a very loyal girlfriend.

Fuck - That

Yay for cheating, although I probably won't ever do that in my life.
Statement: How hypocritical of me
Query: But will I ever consider cheating?
Passive Response: Only if my personality changes for the worse
Rhetorical Question: What would cause my personality to change that drastically?

Kazilla
2008-10-06, 07:38 PM
I've cheated before, it's not fun at all. You get some worked up with emotion and when you are with the person you shouldn't be with things get out of hand. I feel so bad for the girl I cheated on, I went and told her right away. I felt like shit, Yay for 5 seconds of pleasure and a lifetime of pain. Don't urge her to breakup with her current relationship, but if she isn't satisfied then thats your chance to strike.

Be there in the background. Their relationship could quite possibly end, and there's you a lady!

Lenny

Indeed, indeed. Could be quite a novel experience.

But no cheating. Cheating is baaaad. Shame on those who want to!

I'm not a smurf any more. :(

For the record, being "the other guy" is much easier than actually doing the cheating yourself. None of the responsibility, all the benefits. I highly recommend it.

Jessifer
2008-10-08, 11:15 AM
Perhaps it would be easier. I wouldn't want to be in a relationship with the type of person in the middle, however. If they're willing to cheat on someone to be with you, who's to say they wouldn't cheat on you to be with someone else?

Lenny
2008-10-08, 06:09 PM
She seems pretty happy with him, so I'm not going to push.

Still waiting for the Smurf pictures (:(), and the Bond pictures (:(), but hopefully they'll be put up tomorrow. We've started a Facebook group for our corridor, so we should start putting things up pretty soon.

It was my Freshers Week, man, of course there were!!

Well, two. Monday was Noah's Ark, Tuesday was James Bond, and Wednesday was just time spent in the bar.

The pictures are up, and I'll link to them tomorrow.

Corridor Pizza Night! :D

Well, six of us (five guys, one girl). Had a nice time talking, and eating, and drinking. And that's about it. Fun, though.

Tomorrow I've got from 9 until 1, with the afternoon free, and then on Thursday I have seven straight hours with no break for lunch. :( Friday ain't bad, though.

Where's your bowtie?!

Jessifer
2008-10-15, 08:15 AM
See, that's the only time I enjoy drinking, when I'm hanging out with people and we're all just relaxing and talking, and maybe playing a game here and there. Bars are just so...loud, and expensive...

Unfortunately for me I'm the only one in my group of friends that seems to think that way.

Lenny
2008-10-15, 05:07 PM
I'm saving the bowtie for a college ball. Smart dress is the suit without a tie, formals is the suit with a tie, and a ball is the suit with a bowtie.

I need a new tie, though... I'm like a girl with dresses - I must have a new tie for each formal!

Jessifer
2008-10-16, 08:33 AM

Fixed. ;)

Lenny

It's more dresses over here... at least with people my age and formal/balls. Girls don't seem to care about shoes, it's more dresses.

Lenny

By my calculations, I won't need to wash any socks foooor... quite a while.

I'm a fan of socks. :)

Tonight we on the corridor who didn't go out went out on a mini bar crawl of a few colleges around Mildert. Waster girl blacked out again, and we just so happen to have a trolley on our corridor, so we put her in it. :) Get it? She was trolleyed, so we put her in a trolley. Hilarious.

Jessifer
2008-10-19, 02:00 PM
Your foreign humour would be funnier if I were familiar with your terms.

Lenny
2008-10-19, 04:49 PM
"Trolleyed" is just another way of saying someone is very drunk. Others include "rat-arsed", "wasted", "hammered", "pissed" and "bladdered".

Seeing as we had a trolley on the floor (and still do! We reclaimed it from the corridor below us), we thought that "trolleyed" suited her best. If we had any hammers, say, then we'd have gaffer-taped them to her. The same applies to bladders, and even rat arses.

Tonight we took part in the Pub Quiz. We didn't come last, but we weren't in the top three, which means we got somewhere between 28 and 38 points.

Grav

What the hell kind of world do you live in??

Lenny
2008-10-19, 05:35 PM
England. :)

To be perfectly honest, I think the student culture at Durham is totally different to that at other Universities (and a whole world away from American Universities, I'd imagine). We seem to be a cross between all other English Universities, and Oxbridge - yes we party. Yes we drink. Yes we have fun. But we don't drink continuously, but nor are we all frigid, alcohol-hating geeks. It's very laid back, and fun, and, in a way, intellectual. I've been speaking to friends at other Universities, and all I've been hearing is "drink, vomit, hangover, terrible time in lectures, drink, vomit, all-nighter, vomit some more".

It's quite interesting, actually.

Oh, Oxbridge is Oxford and Cambridge, for anyone who doesn't know, and they're basically the rah Universities - uber-nerds whose idea of a party is gowns, flutes of champagne, and conversation about Science and Maths. Even the Arts students do more work and party less than any of the Science students from other Unis, and Arts students never do work!

Grav
2008-10-19, 05:40 PM
Cambridge is where Stephen Hawking is?

Lenny
2008-10-19, 05:58 PM
Indeed.

Richard Dawkins is at Oxford, and at Durham we have Bill Bryson as our Chancellor (I don't think he actually does much, rather it's more of a ceremonial position... I'll have to look it up, just to be sure). :)

EDIT: Yeah, the Chancellor is just a figurehead, with the real work done by the Vice-Chancellor.

Hmm, I liked Oxford's campus when I visited Cambridge 3 years ago. Or maybe all of England colleges have nice campuses?

Lenny
2008-10-21, 04:51 PM
Unlike the [major] American Universities, which are set in their own, landscaped campus, English Universities are usually located in cities, with the buildings dotted here and there. Durham is very much a University city - a huge chunk of the population is students. Accomodation is in two parts: the Hill colleges (of which my college, Van Mildert, is part) situated on Mill Hill outside Durham, and the Bailey colleges which are in the centre of Durham. The Science site is a separate site between the Hill colleges and Durham, and every other department is within Durham.

The same applies to places like London, except that the accomodation in London is rarely out of the way. It's more common for students to live in flats above stores.

That's not to say that all Universities are based in cities - some have their own, self-enclosed campus, but they're few and far between.

It was (and still is, for two hours) the Freshers' Ball tonight - I'm not prepared to spend £40 to stand in a corner nursing a pint of coke for six hours, with an hour bouncing to a Pendulum DJ set (though I am disappointed that I'm missing the DJ set), in a place I don't know, surrounded by people I don't know, with nowhere to go if I get bored because we arrived and depart on a coach, so I stayed in with the rest of the corridor. We watched the football in the bar, then went to the "Pizza Party and Kids Games" in the JCR, where we played Connect Four, Wii Sports, Twister and Pool. I also had a brief, but nice, conversation with the girl mentioned in the OP (she was looking lonely, so I ambled over). After the gamesd we headed back to the bar, and had shots of straight cordial. :p Oh, and we (four of us) walked back to our corridor with 16 pints of coke in plastic pint cups. :D

Interesting night.

Mildert/Grey formal tonight - nice food. Soup to begin, a main course of lamb, and a nice ice-cream thing covered in white chocolate for dessert.

Then I played Snooker for a couple of hours. No, I didn't play a few games in two hours, rather I took two hours to play one game. :p

You seriously don't know what Snooker is?!

It's like Pool, but bigger, and different. I think it's one of the best sports there is.

One of the World's best is Ronnie O'Sullivan, and this is his maximum break from the 2008 World Championship:

http://uk.youtube.com/v/HbCM9F7EZY0

You pot a red, then a colour, until all the reds are gone. Then you pot the colours in order (Y, G, Br, Bl, P, Bl).

That's interesting that all your universities are buildings spread out in cities. That seems somewhat inefficient. Are there any THAT far apart? Like many kilometers?

Here's a map of Durham. I've circled my college, and where I have my lectures. And this (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y97/Lenny1882/view2.jpg) is the view from one of my windows.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y97/Lenny1882/Untitled-1.jpg

From my college to the P in square E3 it's about a mile - Durham is a fantastically small city (well, the town itself and the University campus. If you take the housing estates outside of the city into account, then it's probably a few times bigger, with a much larger area). The big city campuses like London, or Manchester, can have distances of three or four miles between Halls of Residence and Lecture Rooms/Departments.

Jessifer
2008-10-25, 09:12 AM
Oh...now I want to play.

Lenny
2008-10-25, 08:17 PM
I played again tonight - a slight improvement, too! 45 minutes. :D

Usual bar activities preceeded, as did the capturing of various drunken activities on film (well, memory card).

Jessifer
2008-10-26, 11:00 AM
Drunken activities are fun. Like drunken Guitar Hero. Or drunken Rock Band.

Woo!

Willkillforfood
2008-10-26, 01:51 PM
Alright. That's not that bad then. It's over half a mile from where I park to my classes. How big is your college? Mine is like 27,000 students.

Asamin
2008-10-26, 03:22 PM
Holy shit! The other guy never even got up!

Lenny
2008-10-26, 03:24 PM
Around 15,000, I think - 3,500 of whom are Postgrad (PhD).

There are about 250 students in my year in my college, with probably 1,000 students in total. There are 16 colleges in total.

---

A maximum break can do that to a man, Asamin. One of the greatest things to see in a Snooker game.

---

Tonight has been... interesting. We started by catching up on various TV things we've all missed, and then someone dislocated his knee. :) The ambulance came, the Paramedics gave the guy oxygen, and then the fun started! I got a lot of photos, but wish I'd recorded it - some of things he was coming out with! The best was when we stood around the ambulance and a girl mentioned that it was cold. He stopped puffing on the oxygen, sat up, and said, "I'll tell you what isn't cold, Kat - your mum!".

Jessifer

---

I was thrown out of my first bar tonight. :D

Our corridor rep took us (the corridor) on a college bar crawl, and we decided to play a different drinking game in each one. The third we got to was a college called St. Marys which, until two years ago, was exclusively a girls college. Anyway, we were all sat down in a tiny bar (can't have been more than eight feet by fourteen feet), drinking, and playing What the Fuck. After ten minutes, the bar staff walk over to us, take our drinks away, and tell us to leave... which we did, out through the high, echoey halls, chanting Mildert Ranger* (our college song).

**Mildert Ranger

A typical call and repeat chant - one person calls out the line, and everyone repeats it back, at the top of their voices.

I want to be a Mildert Ranger
I want to live a life of danger
I want to be a scuba diver
I want to have a sixty-niner
There was a girl I liked the best
Many times I sucked her breasts
I fucked her standing
I fucked her lying
If I had wings
I'd have fucked her flying
Now she's dead
But not forgotten
I'll dig her up
And fuck her rotten
Mildert Ranger!
Mildert Ranger!
Mildert Ranger!

---

Tonight was fun - we had a Halloween Bop, whic involved everyone dressing up as one of the seven deadly sins. I went in my pyjamas, a dressing gown and slippers - Sloth! One guy on the corridor went only in his boxers, and covered himself with chocolate spread - Gluttony!

Jessifer
2008-11-01, 10:15 PM
And who had the honors of being Lust?

Lenny
2008-11-02, 03:59 PM
I don't think anyone on the corridor went as lust, actually. There were two other sloths (we 'fell alseep' in one corner together, then decided we could all do with a beverage), a few gluttons, a couple of Envy's, some greeds, some angers and two prides, but I don't think we had lust.

Jessifer
2008-11-03, 10:16 AM
I am disappointed. :( Lust would have been the funnest to dress up as.

Lenny

Quite a good night - another bar crawl, then pizza, then a film (PotC 1). On Monday, my corridor has a full bar crawl with the college Exec - that's 14 bars!! Should be fun. :D

Way to lead us on, Lenny.

You folks are far too gullible. I told a friend and he saw straight through it. "How many had she had to drink?" he asked me. :(

She did take her skirt off at some point during the night, if that counts?

Pub Quiz tonight, then Top Gear (WW - it was very good! Watch it! :p).

Eh, close enough.

The Exec Bar Crawl didn't happen tonight - some of the Execs couldn't make it. :( But we've rescheduled it to a Friday, which is alright.

Tomorrow we're having a corridor night in with pizza and films. Should be fun.

So, back to the drunk girl in your bed...

Is there potential there? Or are you in the friend zone having played the nice "I'll just sleep on the floor" guy?

Lenny
2008-11-18, 03:23 AM
Alas, no potential there. She's going out with a guy at the other end of the corridor, so it's the friend zone for me.

Jessifer

It's not so bad being friends.

Lenny

True, friends ain't bad. She's going out with a guy at the other end of the corridor, anyway.

And she's a Scouser. Personally, I think I've got off rather lightly. ;)

Scouser?

A Liverpudlian, a native or resident of Liverpool

Maybe?

Indeed. One gold star for Speccy! :D

Not much has happened tonight. I've got a multicoloured face from toner, but that's about it. Oh, and the carpet in the corridor outside my room is multicoloured. As is the hair of the guy next door.

This morning I handed in my first piece of work, and this afternoon I handed in my next five. Fun...

Having some printer issues, Lenny?

Btw, Top Gear is the best car show ever. Been watching it for years.

Lenny
2008-11-19, 05:51 PM
Kinda. It prints fine, and technically isn't broken... it's just that anything that uses the black toner comes out streaky. I've had a brief look (hence the toner everywhere - I've just found some in my own hair, too, and my glasses have a blueish tint), and I think that there's some rubbish on the black roller. The three colours come out fine, which suggests its not the main roller or any of the rollers the paper is in contact with, so I'm concluding that it's the black roller. Even if it isn't, it'll give me a chance to clean the printer - there seems to be toner marks everywhere. I think the waste toner pipe might have a small leak.

I've got some newspaper to lay everything out on, so when I get down to it after my lectures tomorrow I should be able to do it without getting stuff on the carpet again.

There you go Lenny, no more discounts possibly for happy hour :p. Go lobby against it.

They're going to ban drinking games?!?!

Lenny
2008-11-22, 06:09 PM
Doesn't bother me - student bars don't have happy hours, as they're cheap all year round, and it's going to be impossible to enforce a ban on dirnking games.

This amused me:

Shillito said low prices for alcohol had helped encourage drinking among British youths, noting "they can buy alcohol with their pocket money."

It's not the low prices which make for more drinking, it's the fact that most of the scrags get £20 pocket money a week.

Anyway, we were going to watch Quantum of Solace at the local cinema tonight, but we discovered that it's only showing it on Monday and Tuesday (with Tuesday being the last day), and none of us can make either day. So instead we stayed in and watched: The Last King of Scotland, Alien, some episodes of the Mighty Boosh, and the latest episode of Have I Got News For You.

Quite a good night, actually.

I think I'm starting to fall for one of the girls on the corridor, too. It's quite... interesting. I'm intrigued as to how it happened, and what might come of it. Maybe I'll be able to put my diary to good use at last! :D

New game! For every minute someone doesn't enforce the ban, take a shot!

Ooo, romantic revelations in the life of a Smurf.

Maybe. Maybe not. It awaits to be seen. Hopefully - this Smurf is overdue for some lovin'.

Played at the SCA Jazz Night with Big Band tonight. As a band we played well. As a Big band we didn't.

Pub quiz we came joint fourth out of seven. S'alright, I s'pose.

Alas, I haven't updated for quite a while. So now I shall. :)

Everything is gravy. We're still bonding well as a corridor group (I don't think there is any other corridor that hasn't split down into groups of three or four - we're still a group of fourteen!), and regularly have nights in/out together - Saturday's are now Film Night, Sunday is Pub Quiz and Top Gear night, and every other night is a do something night. Next Friday we're having a corridor Christmas party, and on Wednesday we're going out on some form of Bar Crawl.

Ooooh, the best news - last night we won the Pub Quiz! :D Our team, Charlotte's Pants: They Contain Nuts (named after a, ahem, girl on the corridor) got 32 out of 52 questions right, tied with another team, and smashed them in the tie break question. :) Well, I say smashed, they were 108 years out, and we were 57 years out (the question was: In which year was toilet paper invented? We handed our answer in written on a piece of toilet paper, too!).

Do't think there's much else to add. I've spent quite a bit of time this weekend in Corridor Girls vicinity, slept nowhere near as long as I should have done, and generally had a fantastic time.

I'm going to miss it when term finishes on the 17th, and will be very glad to be back on January 18th. I've got a week and a half until then, though, and I plan on making the most of it. ;)

Last night was an interesting night - I was made to drink!

Well, I say made... a couple of people bought me a rather large bottle of Smirnoff Ice, and a few other people bought me a number of double Malibu and Lemonadey things, and I drank them (bad manners to refuse free alcohol)... and nothing happened. It had no effect at all! Not even a little bit. I was disappointed. The M&L tasted like swimming bath water after a while and everything! No hangover, either.

I'm starting to think that being drunk is a game drinkers play on non-drinkers to make us feel like we're missing out on something.

My friends enjoy getting me drunk. I think it's a game for them since I so rarely drink much. :T
