View Full Version : Correct Usage of Grammar

Lenny
2008-08-20, 12:35 PM
We've had a few posts recently that discuss grammar. I'm going to move them into this thread, and leave it open for all discussion of grammar - things like "me or I", and when an should be used instead of a. If you have your own questions then ask away!

If anyone would like to learn more about grammar, I recommend reading Eats, Shoots & Leaves by Lynne Truss.

EDIT: And to make the thread seem like it makes sense, I'm going to throw one word out to people:

Colour.

KagomJack
2008-08-21, 10:59 AM
Remember that there is no need for an "u" in color, silly Brit.

WetWired
2008-08-21, 02:58 PM
Colour can be spelled with a "u".

KagomJack
2008-08-21, 11:48 PM
Why would it be "a" when I thought vowels take "an." And I was picking on Lenlen. I'm allowed to do that.

WetWired
2008-08-22, 10:36 AM
The name of the letter u doesn't start with a vowel sound. Would you say:
an united front
an yes man
an useful invention
an universal convention

A lapse in my English skills. Do forgive.

Don't forget about slaynish and I.
quoted for correct grammar

Lenny
2008-08-22, 05:09 PM
Actually, the correct grammar there would be:

Don't forget about slaynish and me.

or

Don't forget about me and slaynish.

http://www.askoxford.com/asktheexperts/faq/aboutgrammar/meandi

As a general rule, take out the other person and see if the sentence still makes sense:

Don't forget about I.
Don't forget about me.

Kazilla

i always thought it was if you are talking about 2 peopole in a sence it is "shirley and I" i was always scolded for "shirley and me"

Lenny
2008-08-22, 05:17 PM
It depends on the rest of the sentence. "Shirley and me" is just as correct as "Shirley and I", but only if used properly.

It's one of these rules that most people half know, and so misunderstand, thinking that the "and I" should be used instead of "and me" all the time.

It seems to me that it has more to do with how the word sounds in the beginning rather than the actual letter it starts with.

An umbrella
An underdog
An hour

United, useful, and universe all start with a "y" sound.

WetWired
2008-08-22, 10:15 PM
So does the name of the letter U (pronounced "you")

Kazilla

This is the reason i got a C in senior english and an A in spanish...

Comb
Tomb
Bomb

Screw thy language

Jessifer
2008-08-23, 09:02 AM
Which is why it would be "A 'U'", and not "An 'U'". I guess what I'm getting at is if the word sounds like it would start with a constanant, then "A" would go in front of it, if it sounds like it would start with a vowel, then "An" would go in front of it. I was always under the impression that if a word started with the letter Y, then Y would be considered a constanant and not a vowel.

...This makes much more sense in my head...

I sumbit an idea for the approval of Chruser.

Grammar Protector - They are given the right to correct anyones fowl grammar. They can't be flamed for their corrections against 1337 speakers around the world. They shall enforce (thx jess) correct grammar throughout the zelaron community. Anyone seen taking on the identity of a Grammar Protector shall feel thy wrath.

lol i really like that idea, you could also throw in the rank of Offical Thread Bumber - allowing thy person to sumbit a review of a good thread bumb, or a post count thread bumb. (impo a thread bumb should have some more umpff in it then "lol i remember this")

With these 2 ranks integrated into our community - there will be no need for flaming a grammEr whore or a thread bumbing post countbuilding troller!

(i just finished watching 300, so i felt like im was yelling @ my army when i was writing all of this lol)

the point of the grammar patrol is to uphold order - and not have every mispelling forum troll attempt to correct his grammar. It would NOT be to make anyone look like an ass.

Seeing as Lenny is british, and we all think he talks funny when actually he is the only one who pronounces english correctly i nominate Lenny as the 1st Grammar Protector

Kazilla
2008-08-23, 02:33 PM
who said anything about banning anyone - you are taking this far to seriously... It is to prevent people like you and me and the other incorrect grammar users of this forum from trying to correct another bad grammar using person. There is no need to ban anyone - it just leaves the grammar correction to the idividuals selected for the job. It also prevents instances like this...

Kazilla posts:
Haha that was so funny u are liek the 1337man skooeler or zelaron!

Joeschmo posts:
Dude your a fucking idiot lrn2english or gtfo! Idiotiocy can not comprehand grammer.

Kazilla posts:
Shut up dude you cant even spell grammar.

Instead if would look like this...

Kazilla posts:
Haha that was so funny u are liek the 1337man skooeler or zelaron!

Grammar Patrol posts:
Translation: Ha, that was really funny Joe. You are amazing, and i hope you stick around at zelaron for a long time.

It prevents Joe Somebody from flaming the thread into the removal from The Lounge into the Flame Forum. I think it is a brilliant idea. Again it wouldnt be to get anyone banned, or make fun of anything - infact it could be used to make fun because it would all be in good fun. You cant laugh @ anyone untill you can laugh @ yoruself.

there is an english comedian who said that "you all think i talk funny, well really - i'm pronouncing english correctly" it was funny, be it chruser (althoguht im sure he has enough on his plate already) or someone else, i think we should designate someone for the job. Itll keep threads clean. You could also just say everyone stfu about grammar - but odds are that will result in a grammar war against you >_<

All I can say is that jamer123 shouldn't have a part in this conversation, with his terrible grammar and spelling.

To properly write this sentence, that you so properly butchered.

"You just proved that you can't/cannot spell or use correct grammar."

Good, leave. You're the only member I can't stand because of your atrocious spelling and grammar.

-------------------------

Kazilla and jamer123 are the only members on this forum who have stayed and need help with their grammar and or spelling. I think we might need to start making some grammar lessons for the stupid/less intelligent of this forum.

Lenny, I think you'd do well with those lessons. Then you can add an audio tape with it. Just an idea. Not that it's really going to happen.

1) Which one of these simple sentences are correct?

A) Its name.
B) It's name.

2) Which one of these are more proper than the other?

A) I'm going to take a trip to my home town
B) I'm going to take an trip to my home town
C) I'm going to take a trip to my home town.
D) I'm going to take an trip to my home town.

------------------

Hey, it's working already!

"Are," is used when talking about more than one item.

Yay! I'm having all sorts of fun with random crap. Well, I'm off for the day, I think...

EDIT: I forgot to put the word, "one," in one of my sentences. Woopsy!

A and C were correct. It was just a test.

A semicolon (;) is used when combining two independent clauses together.

You have to admit some of that grammar is incorrect.

If we enforced grammar, we might also have to forbid Zelaronians from using words like don't, won't, couldn't, etc. etc. I admit refraining from using those type of words (forgot the term) would be a minor annoyance.

you're going to fucking start this again? I told you before, fuck your ignorant little ass off. Not using those type of words is exaggerated. I only said that because when writing formal works, one refrains from using them and instead uses the longer version. If we were to start enforcing grammar, that would be the exaggerated route.

It's not necessary, in my opinion. You're still going to have people who will flame poor grammar.

I, for one, find it rather entertaining.

Also...I never noticed until now, but necessary and unnesessary aren't spelled alike like one would think. Unless dictionary.com is wrong, that is.

Really Wallow? Really?

Nope and Hope share the same pronunciation. That is why I compared the two. I then compared nop and hop because they too share the same pronunciation. I have to give you some credit though, because I actually don't know what nop is. Neither does dictionary.com http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/nop
