If you are actually asking how you should make the image itself you want to use in your avatar, there is a vast amount of different graphics editors, image editing software, 3D software and so on for creating your own images. Anything from Microsoft Paint to Adobe Photoshop (http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/index.html) or Maya (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?id=7635018&siteID=123112) will work, depending on what exactly you're after.
