My friend recently bought me a hookah. I've smoked it a few times, and love it sometimes. It goes down smooth, tastes good, and I've learned to blow some pretty badass smoke-rings. Other times it burns the shit out of my throat. Why does it do that, and how can I fix it?

I've got buddies that go to the Hookah lounges, and they all tell me that it depends on what you smoke that'll burn your throat or not, as well as how big of hits you are taking, you don't want to over-do it because they can dry your throat out as well.

Well, for instance, yesterday I smoked a bit of a flavor called double apple. It was great. Then I put a new coal on top, and all of a sudden it started burning like a bitch.

Is it only when you add more fuel? Maybe there's something on the outer later of your coal or perhaps it just heats up more.

Nahh, it was like that throughout that entire coal, and by then I didn't really feel like smoking much more.

I'll ask my ex when he gets home why it does that. He knows a good bit about hookah.

Would be appreciated, KJ.

Are you getting the same 'brand' coals? I haven't particularly had this problem, but maybe your lungs are not used to that much smoke?

Yea, it's the same brand coals. In fact, they were out of the same package. I don't think it has to do so much with my lungs. This happens sometimes where the first coal burns my throat whereas the second one doesn't. This generally doesn't happen at the Hookah station. However, if it does happen over there once they replace my coal for me it quickly goes away and becomes smooth.

He says the coals are getting too hot.

What type of cover do you have? Foil or metal?

foil isn't metal

What the hell are you talking about? I'm just asking if it's a foil that he's burning the coal on or a metal.

no its just that you have to change the tobacco flavoring in the bowl after it starts burning your throat. also, use foil and don't make giant holes in it. Get like a tiny pin and pul lots of tiny holes instead of little bit of huge holes.

Smoking a hookah always made me feel ill. Which is odd, considering I'd smoke plenty of other things.

That sounds like a normal, common sense thing to do.
