I don't exactly know if VB has a built-in system, but a car forums I use has a button on each person's account name where you can give them E-Repuatation. It's somewhat cool, you can either Approve their comment or Disapprove of their comment and there are green Dots and Red dots that represent how much reputation they've received...

It's just a little add-on I feel would be pretty cool on here. We could also use a re-vamp of Smilies. I don't know if you guys have an access to a database of them where you can add in more, but it's always nice to have more of the little things, just something to throw out there.

I'm also part of a forum with a version of the E-rep thing. The problem with that one is, they're a bunch of immature fucks that disapprove of every single post so I have like +49 karma/-400 ... everyone on that board has a ratio like that. I mean, if we can find a way to where we can't abuse it then yeah that'd be tight.

The site I use has a limit, it's like 3 per day I believe, and 7 per week per individual user. Seems to work pretty nice, it's some-what hard to abuse. And i'm sure if somebody on here abuses it we could just report it to a Sup Mod/admin and they can handle it with temp bans, etc.

All the forums I'm on have one sans RPGSource.

I suppose I should've added a poll, if a mod could do so that'd be great. Just to see what everyone thinks in a more organized setup. I personally think it would be cool, just another little qwirk to help out the site a bit.

I can envision something like that being abused a bit, but therein lies the fun.

If it were left just at rep, though, with no incentive to work towards getting a good rep score, I could see it eventually dying out. But if you got something at various rep stages, then it would mean a lot more people would go for it.

At least, that's what I think.

Well hmm, people just start throwing out some ideas. Maybe you could implement the Avatar bonus at a certain Rep as well as 100% (either / or)

.. Idk, i'll brainstorm for a bit, i'm leavin work for now though! YAAA!!

The admins discussed this when vB3.0 came out years ago. The consensus is that it would be horribly abused and add nothing. More recently, I had an idea based on the "Gravitonsurge stamp of approval," (http://zelaron.com/forum/showthread.php?t=30433&highlight=stamp+approval) but that requires a shop hack that doesn't suck.

Well the consensus is 8-0 and i'm sure you guys can edit the rankings if you feel they are being abused, and just allow people to report problems from repeat offenders.

I'm sure I'd get banned from it.

Lenny
2007-09-14, 10:30 AM
Darn tootin'. We could even ban you from using it from the word "Go", if you want, just to save us all time and effort. :)

It might be worth it's own thread at some point, but what exactly are you looking for in a Shop Hack, WW?

Thanatos
2007-09-14, 10:37 AM
How would that add 'nothing'? I don't understand your logic when it comes to Zelaron.

I'm sure there are ways that you could bypass the alleged abuse. Make it so you can only +1 or -1 people once every couple of hours or something.

Lenny
2007-09-14, 10:45 AM
It might be a bit much, but why not a brief comment on why you've repped +ve or -ve? I mean, if we ban someone we give a comment as to why, so why not do it with reps, too?

Makes it easier to moderate, and the rep-ee can report abuse of the system judging by the comment (eg, a -ve rep and the comment "Yo mom sukz ass craka!!11!!ONE").

D3V
2007-09-14, 11:51 AM
Well that's how the one works I use on the other forums.

You have an [Approve] and [Disapprove] button you click on and you leave a brief comment, and the user can check his comments in the Control Panel there will be a specific section just for that.

I'd say as long as they had a way to avoid abuse and have a legit Reps, then it'd be badass..

I can imagine some title that you'd have by or under your avatar based on your rep (kinda like how the post count thing used to work)

Maybe..

Ban me please
Loser (I think that ones a given)

Super Member

I dunno.. just throwing out some suggestions of Possible Reps..

And maybe have a "Favored Member" group/rep

ehh I dunno, can't think right now

Depends on what you want this to do.

If you're looking for something to increase activity and such, a shop system would probably be better. Wasn't there a Zelaron RPG? You could tie in posts to generating game-money or something that would reward people for posting.

If you're looking for an epeen boost, this would just be a simple popularity contest, and add nothing at all to the site, it just puts numbers to things generally known. Definitely not worth the effort.

If you're looking to alert new members as to whom is regarded as a good poster, make this available only in sections like Life Discussion and such where people are looking for honest advice and assistance. That would help show people whose advice is often appreciated/etc.

Problem is, that you can just find someone's random post in the appropriate section and abuse it that way.

As for shop hacks, one that's being maintained would be nice. Last I checked, the only shop hack still arround isn't a real shop hack...

Lenny
2007-09-14, 05:22 PM
The answer will probably be, "Very".

The question is - is it hard to program your own shop hack?

And I might as well through in a related question - which programming language/s?

True enough, I was figuring that would limit the damage a bit though.

I definitely don't check on these kinds of things, so if that's the case...

PHP and MySQL.

Well, I could throw together a shop hack to some extent, but then it would be full of problems and easy to exploit.

That's why you guys can check if somebody complains about it. Shit, you aren't that hard to jump on any other PM about somebody complaining about any random thing that may occur, how would a complaint about the E-Rep be any different? You don't have to be so negative right off the bat...

I just see this as a cool little options, you guys are being too serious about it. People abuse every other rule anyways, there is nothing perfect. That's what makes this place cool to post on.

I'm just saying I don't care a whole lot of Thanatos gives me +1 Cool Points because I know I'm already the center of his universe. It would be different if we had a lot of new people come in all the time and they make names for themselves(which they do anyways), or we had 1,000 active members and everyone could tell me how totally cool I am.

I should mention that should it be decided my opinion doesn't matter on this, that both Synthesis and Default should both have reputation system support, so my assistance is likely unneeded to do this.

D3V

Well no-matter what the outcome I think this would be a fun idea, rather than abusing etc. Everything can be fixed and tweaked, people should atleast just give it a chance.

Well, E-REp did go through, And in case you newer guys haven't noticed, you CAN E-REP people for posts you agree with or disagree with.

There is a little Gray box under the user's Box with green or red dots next to it, click and add reputation.

IIRC, it's stored in a signed 32-bit number, so you can go about 2 billion positive or negative.

Lenny

He actually means making your rep score visible to the public, I do believe, and maybe even stats similar to those !K_A! made up:

These values are not real, just made up for sake of explaination.

People who have recieved rep from !King_Amazon!:

Mjordan - 24 Rep, 20 positive 4 negative
Grаν¡tоnЅurgе - 18 Rep, 12 positive 6 negative
D3v - 43 Rep, 4 positive 39 negative
Thanatos - 12 Rep, 10 positive 2 negative

Total Rep Given=97, 47% positive, 53% negative

People who have given !King_Amazon! rep:

Mjordan - 19 Rep, 17 positive 2 negative
Grаν¡tоnЅurgе - 15 Rep, 10 positive 5 negative
D3v - 57 Rep, 3 positive 54 negative
Thanatos - 10 Rep, 7 positive 3 negative

Total Rep Recieved=101, 37% positive, 63% negative

Oh, This would be a great idea! Just, yet again, I think that we should have the option, if it is made, to make ours not visible. For the same reason as post count.

I take back any involvement in this, it has blown up into a heaping pile of useless shit, people continously bitch about it and not being able to publicly view rep and have rep moderated has contributed to it's downfall, I am now suggesting it be removed as it's only causing negativity through progressive bitching.

Nothing is wrong with the reputation system. It's serving its purpose, which is to evaluate individual's certain posts. Nothing more.

People are always going to complain if they don't see something eye-to-eye. The fact is, this was voted by the consesus of the members here and people are taking full advantage of it. I fail to see what the problem is. So you've been negatively repped.... SO WHAT. Grab a tissue and promptly get the fuck over it. Anybody that creates a thread over being negatively repped, causes a hissy fit, should EssTeeEffYou. This is a forum. Who cares what people online, whom you will probably never meet, think of you.

Does it matter either way? Keep the e-rep and hear people bitch about it, Or get rid of it and hear people bitch about it being removed. Doesn't matter to me either way, It's just a button you click on and add a comment..

Just bumping this thread to let some of the newer members, or older that don't know about it or have forgotten about it. E-rep is the little gray button with a Check and an X on it under the User's avatar, you can click it and add Positive or Negative reputation to a user's post. It's essentially a worthless feature, but just something nifty that you may not have thought to use or not. Try it out!
