:p i just dl'ed the rpg maker 2k... it is the sweetest pog ever!
so, as you can tell i am a n00b at this program...i was wondering if their are any on-line tutorials on this prog or any guides... and if not, what im wondering right now is, how can i add a charcter to the game? like i start off with my hero... but i want this girl standing next to him at the start, so that when he talks to her, the story will unfold, and a mission will then be made...how do i do this? can anyone explain and if possible just add some screenshots/pics of how to do it... this would be a great learning for me and the viewers of this thread, and im sure the mods would give you gold... please help me, thank you.

also another question, is their an add on program for this prog that i can change everything in the game? like for example, can i change the characters in the game so that they are holding guns? and can i make my own tilesets?

As for customizing, there is no add-on for that sort of thing. It's built-in. You create the graphics file (check the RTP folder and the Charset folder to get the spacing correctly) and then simply "import" them into your game using the "RAW material editor" under the tools menu of the program.
The graphic file you make should be either BMP or PNG. MS-Paint is sufficient for that sort of thing.
--------------------------
For that story, here are the things you would need.
Make a character event.
Page 1:
(Same level as hero, stand still, push key) : We'll call this one Emily, but whatever you call it will be fine.
Page 2:
(Keep the character animation blank, and under the event conditions, you check one of the Switch boxes, and select a switch you want (make sure to name it something like "FirstMission". Also set to Under Hero.)
Emily would need these events on Page 1: (Though the Face events might be left off if you want)
Select Face: (Whatever face you want for Emily)
Show Message: "Emily> Hey BlueCube, there's a monster attacking the village directly to the south!"
Select Face: (BlueCube's face)
Show Message: "BlueCube> Well, alright, but there's this forest blocking the way.."
Select Face: (Emily's face)
Show Message: "Emily> Don't be a wuss! I'll show you the way!"
Change Party: Add Emily
Set switch: FirstMission
At that point, the Emily event should be gone in the game. Hope I didn't overlook anything...

You don't right click. Double click on the square on which you want to set up the event.
All characters/treasure chests/doors and such are considered events.

Well... double click where you want the character to be.
Then, set up the event like this. (Hopefully you can read the JPGs...)

Only two? It usually comes with six: World, Fasade, Inner, Dungeon, Ship, and beach. Yes, you can add to those through your own creative ability, or, if you don't have any (I sure don't) you can download them.
Page two is there so that the event is invisible, and basically out of the game. You don't want her asking to be a part of the party, if she's already part of the party.....

hmmm...i found the tile sets for dungeon and ship and stuff... but for some reason i cannot select those sets, just the 2 starter ones, the basic ones... going from the 2 views... do you know how to switch it?

Okay, look on the left side. There should be the tileset you have on (Probably World, either upper or lower layer.)
Underneath that should be the name of your game, and under THAT should be the names of your map(s). Right-Click on the map you want to change, and select Map Properties. A new window will appear. On the top left part, there is the name of the map (change it if you want). Beneath that, there is the ChipSet selector.. select the set you want.
----------------
I'll bet, that since you didn't know how to switch the chipsets, that the "two" chipsets you mentioned are actually one and the same: There are two layers to each chipset, Upper and Lower. Lower is typically the general terrain (grass, water, etc) while Upper is for placing objects (trees, rocks.) Upper has priority over Lower.
For example: a tree is on a grass square. You could normally walk on the grass. However, since something from the Upper layer is there, and that particular object can't be walked over (unless you change that), you can't walk on that square.
WARNING: If you have a map made, you shouldn't change the chipset, or it will mess up the map. Quite simply, the tiles are switched. If the 5th tile is say, desert on one of them and on another the 5th tile is water, when you load the map in the new chipset, it reads the data as "5th Tile at location X,Y" and ignores what it used to be.
Understand all of that? If you need something else, just ask...
EDIT: Typo correction.

ok, another question lol... i downloaded some chipsets, and for some reason when i right click on the map, they do not show up in the proporties... when i dled them, i put them into the rpt folder then into the chipset folder and they are in PNG format...how do i get them to work? #2 lets say my hero is walking down somewhere along a map, and i want him to go into a door, and make him teleport into the house, how do i make that happen apon contact with that square? like when i use the teleport option... i have to press space for it to teleport me...
and also...when my character is walking on the maps...he walks through the trees ect...and houses, how do i make them non-passable?
One other question... i want to make seperate maps... because it seems when my hero goes through the door, i teleported him to the site of the map....and i wanted to make that place, but when i switch the chip sets, it switches the ones i have allready made... so i was wondering can u make seperate maps, and when the hero goes through the door, he teleports to the 2nd map?
can u even use multiple chipsets? on the same map?
i even made a seperate map now and when i change the chipsets it screws with the 1st map's...how can i stop that?

And for the second problem BlueCube can answer it because I'm not sure what you mean.
P.S. Maybe you should join the contest, we really could use some more contestants and maybe you could get a few other people to join...

Okay, sorry I wasn't here, I don't use the internet on Sunday.
-------
First off, you CAN'T use more than one chipset per map. To make another map, right click on the name of the game (remember, under the chipset, on the left side) and select "Create New map". That's to make a brand new area. If you want to organize it better, you can drag it to the map you want to be the main map.. Here's a picture of what I mean.
It's picture #1.
http://www.pagerealm.com/bricecube/rpgmaker/randompics.html
------
To set the doors, make sure to use On Hero Touch to set off the teleport event. Or, instead of clicking "New Event" when you want to make a door, pick "Move Event." It makes an event that moves *you*, it doesn't move an event.
------
To make a chipset work, first go into the DataBase. Click on the Chipsets tab. Set the Max Field Number to be one higher than it currently is. Click on the last chipset space (it will be just a number and without a name.) Now, where it says chipset graphic, select the one you want. It should load. Now, here's the "fun" part... you have to set the terrain for each tile, and its pass/block state.
---------
The reason that editing any chipset screws up your other maps, is because of the fact that the chipsets are SHARED by each map. If you mess with World, any map that uses World will be affected.
---------
Did I answer everything? Again, sorry I wasn't here...
