RPG maker 1, me 0... help!

hey forum, long time no see. anyway, i've been avoiding this for awhile but i cant help it anymore...

how..in the hell... do you make it so when you press a key, lets call him space bar, your character swings his weapon, causing damage to a baddie if directly infront of the the swing, i wanna avoid the whole battle screen and all and just go to the staying on the map plan.



PS: if you can, tell me how to make the number of damage cause by you or the mob appear over the head of the damage taker
