View Full Version : $499 PS3 is a bad deal
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1959684,00.asp
As it turns out, a little examining of Sony's announcement press release reveals the $499 model will lack support for Memory Sticks, SD and Compact Flash cards, no built-in Wi-Fi and will surprisingly have the HDMI output removed (necessary for achieving the much bragged about 1080p screen resolution).

Im sure the masses will buy it... but I am not interested. Sony is going downhill. PSP isnt doing that great either, espically in Japan, the DS is far outselling the PSP. Don't get me wrong I like sony, they make some great quality games and they make alot of games... but I got a hunch this next round of xbox vs playstation vs nintendo isnt going to end with Sony on top. Now if only Microsoft would kick their xbox making factories into overdrive before the PS3 ships.

From what i have read and heard on CNS, Microsoft is preparing to unload a shitload of 360's at a lower cost, due to the arrival of Halo 3, which should be coming out around the PS3. But thats just hear say and other people's opinions, not a solid piece of evidence. But if they are right, i think the masses are going to go for the 360, because its A) cheaper then 500$ and B) its got Halo 3 and a variety of new games.

It's rather like the 360, in a sense.
Two versions - the crap version, and the version with everything else.
And here's an interesting thing. Just been reading an intervioew with Phil Harrison, and he said that the HDD in the PS3 are your bog-standard PC HDD. So you can upgrade it with whatever you wish.
But if Sony are still planning to put Linux on the PS3, wouldn't you need to install it on the new HDD?
Not like that would be hard. Use your computer to copy all the data over from the pre-installed hard drive.

I'm definitely going to wait for the price to come down. It's going to be $800 around here at least.

Your lack of PS3/Sony reasoning and information is a joke.
If you actually read some info on the two versions of the PS3 you would know the $499 one is not a joke. Educate yourself before throwing out stupid remarks.
----
Put it this way, Sony stated that you can attach a ny sized externel USB harddrive of your choice at anytime, plus it is not clear if you can swao the internel hard drive or not yet, so gonna have to wait there.
Now, they also said that you can attach USB memory card readers which run in the very low range of pricing. Oh wait, snap, you can use Component cables and still reach 1080p since the majority of HDtv's that are out do not even include an HDMI input--in other words, HDMI ready tv's are not even gonna really hit the market for a little while, so your not missing out. Of course, also mentioned is that Video companies will have the option of disabiling 1080p via component sometime in the future after HDMI ready tv's are mainstream, but it has been mentioned that this will not affect games, only films.
The whole PSP wont work via bluetooth or was it wireless(whichever, doesn't matter) will only come in play if you too lazy to use the USB cable that comes with the PSP instead. Oh boy, this is difficult.
Wi-Fi itself isn't gone if you shovel out the money for a ethernet bridge, but you could just use an ethernel cable anyways. I have a 50' cable running through my walls from my wireless router just for my PS2. I have a wireless card for a pc too.
You see, this only affects the people that bitch and do not bother to take the time to ACTUALLY read up on the subject at hand.
Now im gonna direct you to a forum where you will be able to find out all the info that's pretty much been released. www.ps3forums.com
Go learn now, then come back and post.
EDIT: Wont be $800. The 60gb Canadian version is running at $650 bucks and I believe that was after taxes.. i'm not gonna check, you can find it yourself.
I'm not going to be force-fed marketing bullshit on Sony's spoon just because you told me to. I know your penis shrunk a little bit when you saw this thread, but I am not a console fanboy that needs to suck on some Japanese company's teat. A bad deal is a bad deal, period. You just told me "oh, it's a great deal... if you go out and buy more stuff that will probably outprice the full package system!"

Did you even read my post ass hole? I own all three past gen systems (xbox, ps2 and gamecube) so how am I a fanboy, hmm? I seriously want to know how I am when I own all three and plan on getting all three current gen when I can afford it. So yes, I guess I am a Sony fanboy. Plus, if the cheaper one is such a joke, dont fucking buy it. No one is making you! If you dont care for any console, instead of trying to make it sound like garbage, dont post anything at all. The console is a little pricy, but look at it this way, you get a $1000 Blu-ray rom and all sorts of other things. Right there the price alone isn't that bad for the system. It can do a hell of a lot more then the Wii(which I will get, as well as an Xbox 360 when I can afford them all)
It is not just a console, but an entertaninment machine, like a Media Center PC plus a hell of a lot more. Its not a joke, your fucking shitty as dont give a shit comments are a joke. So are you accusations.
Dont post anything else unless it's going to be of quality.
So yes, I guess I am a Sony fanboy. Plus, if the cheaper one is such a joke, dont fucking buy it.
You summed it up perfectly. I agree, and advise people not to buy it if they plan to get a PS3.

Im just saying it is not a complete joke. My side is I dont own a single SD Card, only form of a mini card I own is a san disk cruizer mini 256mb, I have an externel hard drive kit with a 40gb HDD in it plus my bro's 120gb hdd and an extra 40gb hdd just laying around. Space is not an issue for me.
The only thing I lose out on is on the wi-fi, but going to U next year (before PS3 comes out), I could just use a cheap router.
I dont even lose out on the HDMI ort, I wont own an HDTV within the next five years, not when im gonna be in debt.
SO I only lose out on having less base HDD space and no Wifi if I wanna move it to a few rooms down or something.
Meh, Im getting the $600 anyways.
If I can play my personal music in game, I will need an externel 100gb HDD, I have so much music and diff genres its not funny.

No they don't. Third parties make their best games. The only two Sony-made games in this whole generation that have been worth a damn are God of War and Shadow of the Colossus, which are admittedly two of the best games to ever appear on a Sony console. Beyond that, the only first-party Sony game I can even recall from memory was Legend of Dragoon, which was released 7 years ago, and wasn't that great to begin with.

Good viewpoint from Gamespy about the PS3 price.
Back in college I knew a guy named Mark. Mark was an athletic wonder. The guy could pick up any sport there was and rule at it. Mark was set, guaranteed a one-way ticket to the NFL. The guy was just that good. But then Mark ruined it all by pricing himself out of the market and asking for "eleventy-gazillion a year" (Mark never had a head for numbers). Sure, he'd played amazingly well in high school and college, but he was still unproven in the pros. Yet, he demanded more money than any player before him, and by doing so, shot himself in the foot (it would've helped if he picked an actual number too).
Okay, that was all a lie. I never knew a guy named Mark, and my interest in football is about as deep as my interest in forms of fungus that are capable of thriving in the crevices of the human body. The story above is really about Sony and their PlayStation 3. In a lot of ways, Sony is like Mark. They are pros that have excelled in everything they've done up to this point, and now they've got this amazing-looking system that according to them will make everything else look like snot. Not the clean clear kind, but the lumpy, gross, yellow-green stuff.
Before E3, all the Sony PS2 owners across the globe couldn't wait to get their hands on the shiny new PS3. Sony's new console had an aura of invincibility. It had Metal Gear Solid 4, it had Final Fantasy XIII, it's got enough Cell horsepower under its hood to make Johnny 5 look like an abacus. Sure, Ken Kutaragi, Sony's top dog, has already publicly said on many occasions that the PS3 would be pricey, but it couldn't be that bad... could it?
$499 and $599. That's the price Sony unveiled during E3, and from there things started to go downhill. The competition sounded off. Peter Moore from Microsoft said that for this price tag, gamers could by an Xbox 360 and a Nintendo Wii, and pretty much suggested that they do just that. PS2 fans are beginning to look at Microsoft's Xbox 360 line-up with renewed interest. Sure, the average age of gamers nowadays is about 30, but I'm nearly 30, and I certainly can't afford to dish out $600 on a whim, much less afford to buy games afterwards, and I'm not sure how many people out there are much different. And what about all the kids? Chances are, little Timmy's parents would probably rather save themselves $200 and get him an Xbox 360, or save even more dough and pick up the Wii.
Am I underestimating the faithfulness of Sony's followers? That's very possible. But the last couple times a system launched with a similar price tag -- 3D0? Neo Geo? -- they didn't fare too well, despite being the most powerful boxes in the market at the time. Can Sony break this trend? We won't know until the PS3 launches. One thing we do know for sure is that the playing ground for this three-way console war coming up just got a little bit more level.

There's still 6 months or so until the PS3 is released. Which means there's 6 months to find the money to pay for it. I've been saving up for over a year now, knowing that the PS3 would be expensive (everyone knew it would be expensive), and I'm getting a Summer job.
Slightly harder for the 30 y/o's who want to buy it, but if they give up one thing for six months, they should be able to find the money - most of them probably smoke. They can save however much a month by not smoking, and it helps in the long run.
Sony's new advertising slogan - Playstation 3: Helping people to give up Smoking.

That's a pretty crappy excuse for Sony trying to murder my finances. Sure, I've got six months to save up. I've also got six more months of credit card payments, medical bills, cell phone bills and power bills to pay. Plus, I can guaran-damn-tee you that I won't be able to afford a single game or DVD for another three or four months after dropping the better half of a grand on the hardware. It would drive me absolutely bonkers to have a shiny new piece of gaming hardware in my living room, but no new games to play it on.

At least you've only got to save up for a $499 console. We've got to pay the equivalent of a $799, or so sources say. AND we don't get the choice of 20gb console (then again, why would we want one?).

Ok, then don't buy one. That settles it. Just because they release a console(or any product) doesn't mean you have to buy it.
Its sad to see people bitch about how expesnsive something is, whether they buy it or not. Its even worse if they dont buy it because then they have no right to complain.
Raziel

That's not the point. I want to buy one. I'd do it, if the thing didn't cost me half of my torso. This isn't a fanboy outcry, it's me being pissed off that I'm going to have to shell out over 600 dollars to play the new Ratchet & Clank.
I have every right to complain because the thing is ridiculously overpriced, and if it wasn't, I'd snatch it up immediately. Not being able to afford something is perfectly valid reason to be irritated.
Pull your head out of your ass.

Thats like homeless people being irritated they cant afford food and shelter. Sure it sucks for them but the people who can afford it dont give a rats ass :(
It is overpriced as hell tho. I mean its about the price of a good pc and a pc can do a hell of a lot more then play games.
If you factor in games, extra controllers and sales tax I could build a pretty decent gaming PC for that cost.

Whether they're losing money or not, I would never drop that kind of money on a console. 200 is pushing it for me. ALL you can do on it is entertainment. Valuable, yes, but HOW valuable? It's not 5 or 6 hundred dollar valuable to me.
