Program called IrfanView. Primarily a picture viewer, but it plays video files and most forms of music files.

EDIT: You need to download and install the program, then download and install the Plugins - in that order.

Get a new computer. Even my laptop has no troubles with Windows Media.

Try VLC media player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc) if all else fails. It supports a lot of different platforms, and it's also open source. It appears that the memory consumption of VLC is slightly less than that of Winamp. VLC is also the best video player out there, in my opinion.
