Sometimes when I'm driving, my engine's rpm keeps shooting down and up whenever I take my foot off the gas.

Example:

Accelerate to 45. 1,500 rpm @ 45 mph. Take foot off gas. The rpm shoots down to 900. The car slows down dramatically, rpm goes back up to 1,100. Car doesnt slow down as fast.

Thing is this doesn't always happen, just sometimes. The car is 10 years old and has 96,150 miles on it.

What could be wrong?

That sounds weird, if its automatic check the transmision fluid it might be low.

Could be the transmision fluid, or you might need a new transmision. 96,000 isn't exactly new.

Surely the problem is gremlins.

Even when it only happens some of the time? Other times it works smootly as if nothing's wrong.

What car are you driving? What year?

Sovereign

1996 Lexus LS 400

What else would it be? Maybe a messing up computer chip? *shrugs* My friend's dad is a master mechanic but I'm not gonna ask, baha.

Btw, you can google it and find out the problem probably.

Maybe sometimes the transmission is under enough pressure that the oil is flowing fast enough that the transmission can shift properly, sometimes maybe the oil isn't moving fast enough/ under enough pressure. Come on sov its not hard to check oil levels...

its normal for a char, if ur car stays at high rpm even after u released the gas pedal, then there is something wrong wid it.

Sovereign

Like I know shit about cars. Took it to the garage though. They inspected it and said all the fluids minus the oil were good. I got my oil change and now I havnt' had the problem since. It's been only 3 days though. We'll see.

I guarentee you it's not normal. I don't remember it happening last fall, and no other car I have ever driven has slowed down that significantly just by taking your foot off the gas.

Dar_Win
2006-04-11, 08:55 PM
Does it accelerate slower than normal?

Can you tell that it actually downshifts back into first?

Great-Thanatos
2006-04-11, 10:00 PM
Talk about double post...

It shouldn't downshift hard enough to be able to feel it.

Dar_Win
2006-04-12, 02:00 PM
I'm wondering if it's downshifting to first though.

Double posting is allowed as long as I am replying to two different posts, both of which can't be my own. And it can't be spam.

Even though they look pretty damn nice, Merc's are more of a Ladies Car. Unless it's the Merc/Mclaren SLR.

Man alive, is that a car and a half.

Lenny

And, damn, does it eat up the road!

Costs half a million dollars, 617bhp, V8 Supercharged engine, with a 0-62mph acceleration in 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 208mph.

Hit the top speed, slam the brakes on (giant ceramic break discs), and they quite literally turn red from the friction.

Now, the question is: That, or Sov's Lexus? I know what I'd go for.

Or, if you could, what about this? Needs no introduction.

Feast your eyes upon this 1001bhp beauty:

Lenny

The Bugatti?! Ugly?!!

You, sir, are a traitor to mankind!!

Bugatti Veyron - the fastest road car ever made.

Costs £800,000 ($1,700,000) to buy, £5million (nearly $9million) to build.

1001bhp, W16 Quad-Turbocharged engine, 0-60mph in a hell of a lot less than 3 seconds, and a top speed of 253mph.

It still looks like something I would use to hold garbage.

Lenny

Still, a lot of people would recognise that car.

You'd be more popular than you could ever imagine! :p Small price to pay for driving around in the worlds fastest "dustbin".

The SLR is such a bad ass car, it makes me wish I was rich. :(

Lexus aren't that cheap imo, lol.

One thing breaks on that car its going to cost 1,000 to repair. Pointless to have such an overpowered, ugly, and expensive car when you cant even really use it to it's potential.

The fastest I've driven was 120 mph in a 98 bmw 328I and the fuckign thing was getting pushed around by the wind like it was paper. I wouldn't do it again XD

Ugly?! I don't know what they put in American water, but that car is beautiful! Both of them are.

None of you are appreciating what the car has achieved. It's the fastest production car on the road. Not only has it broken 1000bhp, but it's also the fastest thing out there. The engineering on it has to be absolutely perfect, else it won't work. Imagine having the balance wrong at 253mph - you'd flip for sure. And what about if the engine couldn't handle the power? You'd be driving an expensive timebomb. Looks aren't everything.

But I suppose I'll have to let you off...you've probably never seen more than 3 episodes of Top Gear, let alone any of the episodes with these cars in them.

And if you've got a privately owned place to let it go out at full whack, well, there you go. Some of it's potential has been used.

The most beautiful cars are American 1950s style.

Mercedes CLK 55 AMG 4 t w. I'm sure it could get to 1000+ hp after spending less than 9 mil.

EDIT: Oh and to Sov's problem. Most likely what was happening was the oil wasn't lubricating the engine as it should have been and as such was causing friction which would cause the rpms to drop faster than normal.

Lenny

That Merc looks just like every other Merc.

Even Sharky looks better than that...but then again, Sharky is one helluva nice looking car.

What about Audi's? I've always liked Audi's, especially the TT.

I like the early to late 90's look. all these new cars look bleh to me.

I dotn see why people want 1000 hp engines. My dad's car has a 302hp in it and it flys when you press the gas.
