It's like a soap opera!
$500 - $700 for a PS3 will be more than worth it. With all the things they're putting on it, and the probability of it running Linux and so being able to be used as a Home Computer, not just a Home Media Centre, well, you pay more than $500 for a good PC don't ya?
$700 is just over £400. Computers over here, good ones at any rate, start at around £600. For something way cheaper, but far more powerful, heck, who wouldn't?
But who believes that Sony will take the M$ approach and release more than 1 console version? I don't.
EDIT: Hahahaha! I've just had a wicked thought. :p
PSP plays films on it's weird little UMD thingies yeah? Halo: The Movie is coming out sometime right? Who else thinks that it'll be released on UMD when it moves to DVD stage? He he he! A M$ game turned into a film and available to watch on a rivals machine! Then again the 360 can connect to a PSP, so it'll just be Sony's way of getting back at them. :)

360 doesnt do shit witht he ipod or psp.....all it does is be able to play music or pictures off it...whats the point of that? you can't even save the music to the hdd =/
I hope PS3 has locationfee TV included in it....that way I can stream TV to my PSP anywhere I have a Wifi connection

Yes but then you have to ask yourself is it nearly as powerful as a computer? I think not, but still if they decide to put more than one version on the market then I might get it cause my computer can already do all of that stuff I just want better graphics on consoles not 200$ worth of options.
BTW the only reason computers cost so much is because the labor charge why do think they are getting so cheap now with all the jobs of putting these things together being in other countries?
It's killing me here a computer jumped from 4000$ to 1500$ and just the other day when I called customer support I was patched through to a guy in India.

When I was upgradeing the video card in my comp I called HP to find out something about my comp and the guys all "*indian acsent(sp?)*Well, sir I can help you but for me to help you, you need to pay $50 for a year of tech support. It is the best" me interupting" what? i need like 5 seconds of help" he pauses thens"It is the best way and the only way i can help" by this time i'm kinda pissed cause he pauses a lot and i'm on my cell phone which i almost always go over my miniutes=\ "ok fuck you stupid little arab thanks for nothing" *click*...
ahh feels good to vent....i talked to a white friend of mine helped me for free/ in 5 seconds o_O
The PS3's graphics put the Xbox's to shame, I was reading in an article where Allard (Xbox's bitchass 'spokesperson') said that graphics should only go so high blah blah, saying the PS3 is putting in too much hardware that they don't need.
Bullshit, the more the better. We're American, we want more!
But the graphics chip (when the PS3 was still being designed) was like 10x the graphics potential of the 7200GTE (PCI express card, I think 7200 something..). Which is amazing. People have been saying the graphics are very close to reality, and from shots from E3 it's geared up to be the fucking shiznit. Just for gaming.
And then you have the secondary computer concept. Which is also very pheonomenal . All of the media functions that go along with it, the UBER stoarge on the Blu-rays that they are using and the fact that it's playstation is enough for the fanboy in me to put back a little of each paycheck solely for this console. Actually, I've had enough for it for a long time, just waiting for it to drop and it's MINE BITCHES!

The graphics for the 360 is around 32bit I think.
The PS3 has made a phenomenal jump to 128bit graphics. For those who don't know, that's something crazy like 128 shades for each indiviual colour whether it be red, mauve, turquoise or sky-pink!
Yes but then you have to ask yourself is it nearly as powerful as a computer?
Nearly as powerful? NEARLY as powerful?!
Look at the specs of the thing! The PS3 is an entertainment SUPERcomputer. Put a good computer up to it and it would smash it to the ground!

Mm... but. The thing about consoles is that they are made specifically for playing games, (stuff like media centers are just add-on benefits) and are mass-produced for that purpose while computers are not. This gives consoles an advantage in price, but a major disadvantage in flexibility. Computers can have mixed and matched parts, be overclocked, custom cooled, and so on.
Also, the technology behind these systems is very... linear. The technology is already at least a year old and will only get more outdated as time goes by. Meanwhile, computer technology is constantly evolving.
The President of NVidia said that the PS3 has the graphical power of two Geforce 6800 Ultra's in SLI. The current generation equivalent is the 7800 GTX, which without SLI is only about a 10% difference from what the PS3 can allegedly do, and in SLI is more powerful. The next generation of 2006 will likely be at least 50% more powerful than that. It will take the console game makers a few years to really utilize the technology (which has been shown time and time again in the past) so by the time the PS3's potential has been tapped, it will be old news.
Put a good computer up to it and it would smash it to the ground!
This is false. Sure the PS3 is impressive, but it's not better than a top of the line PC.
Top of the line psh. The PS3 can still do more not having to process an operating system with many other processes int he background.
Your computer isn't top of the line, and if you do have a damn 7800GTX you need to die.
The PS3 can do more without an Operating System? That's just a ridiculous thing to say. The PS3 has a relatively small amount of RAM, and with computers a gig of ram is nothing unusual. It EASILY makes up for the resources of an operating system
And what operating system in particular? You can run games using Wine on Linux, and that uses significantly less resources than Windows XP for instance.

I agree with grav.....games are played best on a computer...Whats the most gamers allwoed in a serve ron the xbox? 24? 30? ....the computer can have thousands of gamers on a server simultaneously.....the gaming experience is better on the computer anyway.

better hardware doesn't mean it is automatically better for everything. i think computers and consoles both have their place in gaming. computers for mmo, rts, and fps, while consoles are used for adventure, rpg, action (devil may cry type), and the harvest moon type non combat rpg. i must say putting such a huge pricetag on consoles partially defeats their purpose. if you have to pay as much for a console as a computer (which is more multi talented) then why bother, i'd deal with a keyboard in an rpg to save 500 bucks. then again, this whole new generation of gaming systems is going down the shitter. wtf is the point of a game with voice recognition, i dont want to see a game where you have to woo some virtual chick audibly and then make out with a tv screen. also, fuck consoles going online, period. all it does is let big companies release unfinished games and then patch 15000 times. WOOT.

Consoles with high pricetags means they have the hardware to back it up, chief. You aren't paying more for a console, most computers on somewhat of the same level are still going to run you more if you get them from ANY retail store.

Take the Blu-ray discs for exmaple.
The PS2 kinda led the way with DVD discs, and look where that format is now. Blu-Ray discs have over 150 companies backing them, including Sony, various major Film companies and two of the worlds largest computer companies.
Compared to the HD-DVD format that the 360 is using, well, it's like a single ant versus Goliath. It's got no chance.
The amazing thing is, the Blu-Ray players are at the moment, and still will be when the PS3 comes out, going for something like £1000 a piece. To say you'll get the PS3 for around £300, complete with the best graphics card out there, and amazingly technology, well, Sony must be absolutely insane!

i dont necessarily think that such a big hardware and price jump is the right direction for consoles, at least in my opinion. on one hand, prettier games could lead to shallower games, which is bad. on the other hand, if they keep putting work into the plot and story of a game, while working up amazing graphics, then it could make for the most amazing game evar. one of the downfalls of great graphics is that the better it gets the more little mistakes catch your eye. in snes games, the graphics were the graphics, they werent trying to hide the pixels and they were great, now with the screenshots from mgs 4, the graphics are amazing, but on the borders between colors the pixelatedness jump right out at you, since the rest of snakes body looks so real. not that its bad, just saying that nothing is perfect and that i dont think huge hardware and price jumps are necessary for consoles.

Give them a few years and they'll get the graphics so good that you won't notice anything. And the fact that the graphics will be 128bit on the PS3, well, yippee!!

Everyone is doing at the moment. THe only place you'll see such a good picture is at a cinema, watching a film.
The thing is though, once you've played for a few hours with the new graphics you won't want to go back.

Just kind of like how Osmoses's gay incestuous children won't want to go back to being straight. Alright, alright ...
Graphics aren't everything. Give me good gameplay/replayability without the point of tedium (get that right?) and I'll be happy.
Time to sleep, drugs kicking in. Bai.
