Help with broken PS2

Ive had my PS2 for about two years now. It has always worked perfectly, no problems, and I didnt mistreat it ever. But about three weeks ago, I started to hear this clicking sound when I would play. It soon become louder, and more frequent. Then it said on most games that it couldn't read the disc. Now it wont play any game at all. Im thinking its the CD drive, but I really have no idea. Any ideas?

Which model is it?

This makes a big difference. I've got a PS2 that's done the same thing (but sill plays PS1 games oddly eneough), and due to it's model I can't fix it myself. There's a guide on here somewhere that tells you what to do, how to change the laser position. But only works on the first 4 models. Anything more and it don't...lucky me, I've got the model 5000 or whatever it is.

So, yeah. Which model is it?

I think that you can phone up Sony Customer Services and they'll tell you how to send it to them to be fixed - you only need to pay for shipping to them. They fix it for free and ship it back to you for free. I think...

Two things.

When you talk to them I think they ask you questions.

Answer no to both:

"Have you used gameshark discs?" and other things like that,

and: "Have you used a lense cleaning disc?"

Also if you do, could you tell me how much it costs for you? I'm thinking of doing it myself.

Noes! That takes forever. Go to a Wal-mart or K-mart and buy a new one. Make sure you don't mess up any of the packaging opening it. Then take off the serial number on the new one and switch it w/ the old one. Make sure your old one looks in good shape and put it in the new box. Then return that bad boy. They'll call Sony and check the serial number over the phone, and it'll check out. :D I did it w/ a friends ps2 once cause he was to pussy to try it. Heh.

Or try opening up the PS2 unit and cleaning the lens and pushing back to the farthest position it can be in. I had a couple ps2's that I fixed with that method.

I've tired that with my PS2 many times, yet it still won't work. I think it will still play PS1 games, but won't even begin to read the PS2 ones. The lens doesn't move at all when you try to start up a PS2 game.

What would anyone recommend doing in a situation like this? I don't particularly want to fork out for a new PS2 as I'm saving up for the PS3. I don't care how long it takes for Sony to fix it, as long as it gets fixed and I don't have to pay too much.

I can't find a number, so I emailed their customer support, and havn't gotten an email back in three days. I'm about to go look in my PS2 manual, or on the box for a phone number.

Remember all the papers and whatnot that came with the PS2? The number is on one of them somewhere I believe.
