View Full Version : PS3 Not until 2007?!

According to a ceratin "Wedbrush Morgan Securities" the PS3 may not be realeased until 2007, all due to how well the Xbox 360 is doing. They are basically saying that Sony want to wait a year to destroy the Xbox 360 by lowering PS2 prices (and so prolonging the life of the PS2, and making more profit on it) before releasing the PS3 in late 2006 or early 2007 and dash Microsofts hopes of becoming king of the computer console market.

Nice tactic, but do we wanna wait?!

According to Wedbush Morgan Securities, the PS3 may be delayed until 2007 if the Xbox 360 is not doing well. Although it has not been said where the PS3 will release first, it is suppose to release in Spring 2006.
Wedbush Morgan Securities is saying that if the right circumstances are met, the release date of the PS3 could be pushed back until after the December 2006. In a memo sent to investers, senior Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter set up a possible scenario for the delayed PS3 release.

The current generation Xbox price drops to $99 after the Xbox 360 release and Sony would drop the price of the PS2 to $99. The 2 components in that pricing strategy is the price drop of the Playstation 2 would distract people from the Xbox 360 launch, Pachter stated: "We believe that the company will attempt to disrupt the Xbox 360 launch with a price cut, and as a result may succeed in diverting attention away from the higher-priced next-generation console." A PS2 price drop to $99 would still result in a profit for each console sold as the manufacturing cost of the PS2 is less then $99. According to Michael Pachter, new consoles can be noteworthy, due to the fact that at the beginning of the consoles lifecycle they are sold at a loss. Pachter also noted that the PS2 will cost less to make then to sell, it would be very good for Sony to extend the life of the PS2 because that means profit for every console sold.

If Microsoft puts the Xbox price to $99 (which will be a loss to Microsoft according to Pachter), Sony would be in a clear win-win situation. A cornerstone of Pachter's theory was is Sony does not want to disapoint the the buyers and the retailers by not having many units in high-demand weeks of this coming December. Pachter said, "We believe that Sony suffered the ignominy of being unable to satisfy holiday [2004] demand in order to increase its gross profits over the short term."

If the PS3 launches in the 4th quarter of 2006 and suffers the same situation, Sony would be embarrassed for the second consecutive year. With no PS3's in the channel, there is no chance of a shortage in stock. The most important part in Pachter's argument is if the Xbox 360 does well early Sony will have to be working extremely hard to get the PS3 out as soon as possible. However: "Should Microsoft fail to garner sufficient software support to gain an insurmountable lead, we think that there is a possibility that the PS3 launch will slip into early 2007." After the distribution of the memo not to long ago, Pachter emphasized that he "posted the thought as an option value for Sony." Continuing, he said, "I think the 360 will do quite well."

Yes, because that worked so well for Nintendo with the N64...

If they can pull it off then Microsoft will suffer an amazing Black Eye, and we all wanna see that don't we?!

If they don't pull it off, well, serves them right for taking so long about it. I seem to remember reading (when the PS3 was gonna come out in Spring '06) that Microsoft were planning on dropping the Xbox 360 price at that time.

Talking about Microsoft, I don't know if anybody has heard, but an Australian programmer has released bits of code of a virus that he has developed for Vista...already! Just over a year before it comes out and it's already under threat...:)

Not when we want to 360 to suceed and bring forth another Halo.

I personally can't see what all the fuss about Halo is about. I've played through most of Halo 2 at a friends house and it doesn't seem that special to me.

Don't worry though, the Xbox 360 comes out way before the PS3, as will Halo 3 (probably) so you'll have ample tme to buy it, try it, beat it and so on before Sony try to look clever by crushing Microsoft.

Chances are you'd also be able to download an emulator for the 360 and download Halo 3...heck, it might even come out on PC for you all...just buy a pad that connects to the computer that is like your Xbox one. And you can get them, believe me.

While the single player campaign can be fun, that's not what keeps me playing Halo. It's the multiplayer over Xbox Live. Playing with gruesome, Titus, Tidus, S2 AM, glory, sue, steve, hurt, and the rest is what makes it so much damn fun. And if I were to download an emulator and an illegal copy of one of the Halos, then I wouldn't be able to connect to Xbox Live, and what would be the point?

Lenny

And that's the only, ormain thing you ant the Xbox 360 for? Halo 3 online.

Fair enough.

Anyway, if Microsoft do suffer a Black Eye they'll probably carry on what they're doing yet try some dirty tactic to come out on top. They won't stop production of the 360 or it's games.

Just read an article that the 360 is coming out 25th November over here for around £200. Which is, what, $360? Lol...Xbox 360 is $360...:p

Why do you want to see other systems fall so bad? If there is major competition between the systems, prices are lower, and the publishers and developers are making better games...
Now imagine this, Nintendo goes the way of Dreamcast, Xbox 360 gets destroyed by Sony and the only systems left are the Playstations... there would only be price cuts when a new system is getting ready to come out, and the game makers wouldnt have to make games that push the edge....
Now I sure as hell don't want the gaming equiv of WW2 with the germans winning, and Im sure no one else does either, so thats why I own PS2 PsP Xbox and computer and by games for all of them regulary(sorry Nintendo I still dont like you).
I dunno thats all I can think of to say on the issue, but dont wish other systems to go away, it just hurts in the end.

I jus don't like Microsoft much. And that's more or less it. If Microsoft hadn't made the Xbox, then chances are I would've liked it.

It's just the way they think they are the best and tehn try and muscle in on a market because it looks like fun. It used to be Apple leading the computer world, then Microsoft muscled in and now look. Sony led the console world for a decade or so, still are, but now Microsoft wants a piece of the action. I'm just waiting now for Microsofts answer to an MP3 player. Bet you anything it'll be like a palmtop and have XP or Vista on it.

Didn't the try and by out Linux or something? I don't know that much about it...though I seem to think they were split into two companies?

Yeah, Microsoft ran into that red tape a few years back. I don't remember the specifics of that particular situation. Regardless, the US government won't allow monopolies. It hinders economic productivity.

Then the PS3 should suit you. Out of the box it can have up to 7 bluetooth controllers connected at once. And they say they're gonna make a real effort with playing online etc...but we'll just have to see about that.

And 3 ethernet ports (each 1 gigabit)...connect lots of PS3's together...say 4, times the 7 controllers...you could have the whole street racing you on things like Gran Turismo, each person in a seperate car.

Sum Yung Guy

Wow really, 1 person in each car?!?!?! Im sooo sold now....

Lenny
2005-08-18, 04:06 AM
The new version of GT for the PS3 will have more than the 4 cars...the demos show something like 20. If they've programmed it in, then you can have a street of 20 racing nuts each in a separate car racing each other...without having to go online either. You'd just need three consoles and the 20 pads (each nut will probably have his or her own).

Whereas with the Xbox 360, you'd need 5 consoles, each with 4 wired or wireless pads...that is if you can connect a 360 to another 360 and so on.

Just a little article about the Unreal 4 engine:

After their Unreal Engine 3 presentation today at the Leipzig Games Show in Germany, Epic's Vice President Mark Rein revealed that the company has been on track to produce the successor to Unreal Engine3. [Ed: Already?]

Mark Rein explained , "People don't realise this but we're already two years into development of Unreal Engine 4. It certainly doesn't have a full team yet, it's just one guy and you can probably guess who that guy is." [Ed: Not really hard to guess, eh Mr.Tim Sweeney?]

Mark Rein added that, "Unreal 4 is totally groundbreaking and totally changes the way games will be done in the future," Rein continued, "I don't expect it to be staffed up as a team for a while. But when people come to work at Epic, they know they're going to be shaping the future of the videogame business."

So according to Epic, only Tim Sweeney is working on the project and that they are hiring more people to up the pace on the new engine. It's surprising how Unreal Engine 3 hasn't even become mainstream and they are already at work on a new one. Speaks volumes about their confidence to rein supreme in the graphic engine wars!

Does the TV screen get split 7 ways for you too?

Lenny
2005-08-18, 04:27 AM
1 TV screen?!

Let's say it actually happened...you wouldn't use just one screen, you'd use 2 HD TV screens. Two screens would get split 7 ways.

Maybe more than 2...Sony have announced that you will be able to connect 2, 1080i (I think it's 1080i) HD screens to the PS3 and have it like a Panarama view, but they haven't said whether you can have more than the 2. Still a long time until it finally comes out...plenty of tinkering time. It's a long shot, but one of the clever guys developing the PS3 may think "7 controllers...if they play multiplayer maybe they'd each want their own TV?". Probably not 7 screens when we finally get it...but I'm guessing more than 2.

Acer

Still spliting more than 4 ways is retarded in my opinion... 7controllers for one console... sounds like its just a way to get people excited with realism that it just isnt great.

Go ahead and buy 7controllers and your two big TVs so you can crowd 7 people, 2 TVs to play one game

Jesus Fuckin Christ. I thought everyone on the face of the Earth had went through this. I guess not. Lenny here seems stuck in the stoneage. I'm sorry man but I gotta fill you in here. Let me try to put it into terms you'll like. Computers used to use vacuum tubes. Vacuum tubes were too large, and ultimately you couldn't get very much speed as compared with modern PCs. So what happened, they came out with transisters. When transistors outlived their time, what happened? They came out with integrated circuits.

So let's break it down like this:
Console Era I: NES
Console Era II: SNES SEGA
Console Era III: N64 Playstation
Console Era IV: DreamCast GameCube Playstation Xbox
Console Era V: Xbox 360 Playstation 3
Someone fill me in on the new Nintendo Console, I don't care to look it up

ANYHOW. The idea you are proposing, which you seem to think is the coolest thing on the face of the planet, is an early Era IV idea. Xbox called it "system link." I guess you wouldn't remember because you're a fanboy or Sony. With the "developement" of "xbox live" otherwise known as "console internet gaming" that idea was sacked out the window. Do you realize the time it takes to set all that stuff up? Not only that, but do you really think you are going to get 20 people playing the same game that long and get them to come together? Well let me tell you the answer: No. That's just retarded. Playstation's big brag was it's number of games, too, so unlike xbox(which it's already hard to find people who play the same games as you religiously), it's going to be practically impossible. Plus once you've had 7 people on one console, it's no longer going to be fun, it's going to have bumped downed graphics or a shitty framerate, pick your favorite one. Having multiple consoles, each with its own processor, and each conveniently located in your home, is a much easier way to accomplish multiplayer.

If you ever think about it as someone already pointed out, Playstation has never been the forefront of the multiplayer experience. Playstation 1 only had 2 controller ports, and don't even say they have an adapter for 5 because only 2.3% of the games supported 5 players and those games remain nameless. To top it off, only about 10% of the games supported 2 players, putting it right under the NES, an Era I generation console. Then along came Playstation 2 in all it's multiplayer glory. I don't even want to get into that. Let's just say I'm proud of them for finally capitalizing online capabilities halfway through the Era. Ya if I want to sit down, jackoff, and eat Tostitos, I'll do it with a Playstation... or a porno movie, but if I want good awesome multiplayer fun I'll go with N64 / DreamCast(ya it's better, what?) / Xbox, or GameCube.

Sorry for ragging the Playstation so much, it's just you had it so inflated I had to pop the hollow balloon. I would get one of if it was a decent console. Right now I'll stick with Xbox games, computers games, or GameCube games, in that order.

I was using that as an example...and it looks like a very bad example. I was just saying that that could happen.

You don't need to take everything so literally!

Lenny

I might like living in the Stone Age...we don't get knocked down by cars.

As I've just said to Acer, the idea you think I was proposing was being used as an example of what people might be able to do.

As for multiplayer, I don't give a rats arse about multiplayer. I prefer playing things on my own...and anyway, the only other person living within a mile radius of me that I could play multiplayer with is my sister. Everyone who I might play it with if I wanted to lives a few miles away from me.

As for playing online, I will admit, Xbox got something right. PS2 tried to copy it by bringing out modems for the PS2 and games that you could play online. At their conference, Sony said that the PS3 will have much better internet capabilities than the PS2 did. It has 3, 1 gigabit ethernet ports, one internal and two external. Connect a modem up to one of them and you're laughing! Unfortuately, only Hong Kong will be able to take full advantage as they have the worlds first 1 gigabit internet connection, the rest of us make do with up to 8mb.

----------

If you want to rag about Playstations, then I can't stop you. You're in the Xbox camp, I'm in the Playstation camp. Just as long as you let me rag about Xbox's then we've got an agreement...:p

You're not the only one who seems to take my things literally. Most people I know think that I say things literally...even when I'm not...it's weird.

I seem to have that problem in real life, too. I'm usually somewhat serious, but then when I try to make a joke or be sarcastic, no one really understands. I know from experience if I were a more friendly and joking person, people wouldn't take me as seriously when I need them to. So it's just a choice of how you want people to perceive you. Take the good with the bad.

Lenny

know from experience if I were a more friendly and joking person, people wouldn't take me as seriously when I need them to.

Every thinks I'm crazy. I scare all the little 'uns by trying to make friends (:p...a bit of fun when I've got nothing else to do), people have started surfing the jokes sites to get to them before me, and as I'm usually always happy, people instantly think something disastrous has happened to me if I'm even a little bit downhearted.

YET THE BASTARDS STILL TAKE ME SERIOUSLY!!

Anywho, enough of that.

Which thread is this? I'm arguing in two at once...hard to keep track...PS3 one. Right, well...I haven't the damndest idea how to get this back on topic...though I could say that with all this about the 360, then I wouldn't be surprised if Sony start to reveal the PS3's price as well...but they can't as they're probably still tinkering with it. They have got about 6 months longer than Microsoft to play with, so...

This thread seems to have no purposenow... :(

Nothing much we didn’t know already. At the end of the presentation, it seemed that Sony might as well release a new trailer or a brief info regarding PS3. It was when this slide came up with a picture of the PS3 console. Everyone thought, “This is it!” but it just happened to be a confirmation with the words, “See You Next Year”.

Thanks Sony, for confirming you’re on track with the release of PS3 in 2006. With that the presentation came to an end and reality hit everyone that it was time to leave. Hopefully, with the upcoming Tokyo Games Show, we might be seeing a lot more of the equation and quite possibly some playable stuff too.
