At the recent Game Developer's Conference in Seattle, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata dedicated a few minutes of his keynote speech to Nintendo's future in online gaming. It was in said speech that he announced Nintendo would be joining the online community this year, and that the launch title for said service would be the upcoming Animal Crossing DS.

Although it does not detail in the article anywhere about the cost aspect of their upcoming online service, Iwata has stated numerous times in interviews and articles that when Nintendo does finally launch their online campaign, that it would be free of charge to their customers. So, sometime in the next 6 to 8 months, you can expect to be playing free, online Animal Crossing on your Nintendo DS.
I'm not a fan of online games in the first place, but this one actually has me interested. I always liked visiting other peoples' towns in the GCN version, and now being offered the prospect of getting to do so with the entire world without having to pay for it genuinely has my interest peaked.
I'll post more info as it turns up.
