Go download it while you can. My old 9600Pro came with a CD key for HL2 so once the game is released all I gotta do is put my CD key in and I can play. :)

Half-Life 2 pre-loading begins to Steam account holders today. Over the coming days, those who have selected the pre-loading option will have encrypted Half-Life 2 files delivered to their PC. No purchase is required to pre-load HL2, but is required to activate the game. Purchase options will be released soon. Then, the moment the game is made available, those who have pre-loaded and purchased Half-Life 2 via Steam will be authenticated and ready to start playing. I got the pre load, so... basically I got the game inside of my computer now right? So people can hack into it and make it playble? Just like condition zero, people hacked it and with out purchase they can play.

This is a big ploy to get people to do a big download before they're sure if they want to buy, as well as to ensure simultanious availablity to maximise the number of purchases that will be made before anyone can play it long enough to bad-mouth it. For the pre-loaders who weren't sure, the reviews will have to be pretty bad for them to just dump that DL that took them days to obtain; in the end, they'll pay.

That's a smart idea wetwired but I have a feeling that people willing to actually download it, would play it anyway but

I don't think that you downloaded all the files.. they know people can hack it.. so instead I think they only let you upload textures, most files etc.. but none of the important files like.. hmm.. guns etc?

If they left anything out, it can't be more than a few K, since the whole idea is to get as many people playing simultaniously as possible, and I don't doubt that some of the users are on dialup.
