gendark01, you should just practice anatomy a bit more. You show good potential.

Dr. Geekstar, you need to work away your symbolism. Draw things from life, the way you see them. Not the way you think you see them. As I suggested in IM last night, you could always get the Betty Edwards' book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain.

Penguin, no, no, don't overpaint. It doesn't teach you anything. Using references is perfectly fine, but DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES OVERPAINT. Using Artrage's built-in colour picker is even worse. Open the picture up separately, and try to paint it. If the composition sucks, remove things from it. It's your picture, mess with it however you like. Make it a learning experience.

Keep practicing guys!

Well, it runs on Windows, and the software is available for free. You'd just need to leave your computer on as often as you can so others can connect to your IP address.

Anyway, my internet finally got somewhat back on track. It's been dead, on and off, for two weeks.

Can I just ask which program(s) is being used to create these speed paintings?

Chruser
2005-08-06, 01:42 PM
Thanks guys. As for the programs used, I started with an initial sketch using PaintChat (a free Java application, which kind of resembles something between MS Paint and Adobe Photoshop), and finished it off a bit more in Photoshop. I'm happy with any application that comes with opacity-setting brushes and good color pickers.

Some kind of digital tablet is not necessary, but it's nice to have. The Wacom Intuos series are great if you can afford them. The tablets don't truly give you the feel of a real pen/pencil, but it's pretty close.

My personal favourite applications for digital painting are:

Adobe Photoshop

Photoshop has a very nice brush system (easy to make custom brushes if you want to), and it has a great feel to painting in it. The differences between Photoshop CS2 and the former Photoshop CS are insignificant for anyone who uses the software for drawing/painting applications. I do believe CS2 has some kind of perspective guide tool, but I haven't tried it yet.

http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/main.html

Corel Painter IX

The latest version of Painter comes with a large selection of brushes intended to simulate traditional painting. The program can emulate traditional tools fairly well, but it's far from perfect. However, the sheer quantity of tools, many of which are extremely good, makes the program very interesting, and can be used really well in conjunction with Photoshop. Even if you're normally not into (digital) art, go ahead and download the 30-day, full-functionality trial of the program. It might very well get you interested in the field of art, or at least give you a fun time trying out lots of different art mediums without creating a mess of oil stains. :)

PaintChat

PaintChat is a free Java-based drawing/painting application, which can pretty much be used on all computers with any graphical interface OS. While it is one of the most powerful pure-bred art applications, it also comes with the very neat possibility of partaking in simultaneous multi-user sessions who share one large canvas. It is, unfortunately, not very easy to run without some basic knowledge of Java applets. Some knowledge of the Japanese language is helpful for installing the application, although not necessary by any means.

http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA016309/paintchat/download.html

ArtRage

Just like PaintChat, ArtRage is a free application, with the best oil paint simulation engine to date. If you're not the type of person who knows exactly what you want to achieve when you start painting, ArtRage may provide the same kind of difficulty as real oils; the fact that it's very hard to overpaint wet paints without blending the colors into some weird hodgepoke.

Hmm, did I forget any? openCanvas perhaps, which is a pretty cool multi-user "Photoshopesque" application, but I don't use it very often.

I was looking at the opencanvas site (used the link in the apps thread) and what you can download from there is only a free 30 day trial unfortunately.

For a beginner, which would you suggest playing with to start off with?

For a beginner, which would you suggest playing with to start off with?

For a beginner to digital art with previous traditional art experience, Adobe Photoshop, Corel Painter and PaintChat are all great. PaintChat is the only free application of the three, the rest are 30-day trials.

As for beginning in the field of drawing/painting, stick with a pencil, marker or ink pen, and many sheets of cheap paper. Don't buy the expensive art sketchbooks from stores, look into the kind of 6x8" to 9x12" notebooks you use for school. The blank notebooks without any stylesheet lines are what you're looking for, and they're sometimes ten to fifteen times cheaper than regular sketchbooks per page, at least over here in Sweden.

The best way to learn is to draw from life, and you will develop a sense of form and lighting impact far better than what can be learnt from studying photographs. If you do study photographs, try not to "copy" them, but try to understand them. Why does the light fall upon the object the way it does? How do the plants in the far background grow? Feel the gesture of the scene.

Have you ever heard of a program called Paint.net?

I was flicking through a computer magazine called Computeractive (don't know if you've heard of it, if you have, Paint.net is described in the new issue - 18th to 31st August 2005) and this program caught my eye.

It's freeware and is available to download from the Computeractive site. You may enjoy it:

www.computeractive.co.uk/2129101

That link takes you to a page with a description of the program, specs (of sorts) and a link to download it.

In the computer active magazine it is described:

This enhanced version of the standard Paint program that comes with Windows offers some powerful features that are normally to be found in paid-for-image-editing programs. In addition to basic editing tools it includes support for layers and several visual effects, and it is possible to use the Undo function multiple times. This program requires the .Net framework to be installed - go to www.computeractive.co.uk/netframework if it is not already installed.

Thanks guys. I've noticed that people really prefer my more detailed works, but I still like to keep things loose enough to capture the mood/light/basic ideas. In a sense, it feels like tidying up / adding details to the piece is solely the result of wanting people to find amazement in your technical expertise. "Ooh, the skin is so slick that it looks like a photograph!" Spending 5 hours smudging color blobs together doesn't teach me anything, it feels. Or am I just stupid for not aiming for what "most people really like"?

I know that this thread is a "Speed Painting" thread, but online the first it seems to be only you contributing. You ought to start up a third thread, again with a certain theme, and a time limit of an hour per picture, and see what people come up with. Just one page of this thread is enough inspiration for most people, let alone 4 pages :p you never know what might come out.

Jamesadin, thanks.

My computer decided to die on me. I had the chance to try Windows XP 64, but it refused to let me install a majority of the drivers. I had to revert back to an older OS, and now I'm without scanner drivers again.

New stuff. I should start posting daily, but I'm too lazy to scan so often. Make me. ;)

Lenny, thanks. Not sure where that castle is located, I just picked a random photo on my computer for reference for that one. As for tutorials, I suppose the best thing you could do is to just grab a pencil and start drawing things you see around you. That is, fruits, plants, buildings, people, anything you come across. Build a visual library. Even if you won't remember how to draw a specific person you're practicing, you'll still improve over-all.

I guess this place has a couple of cool painting tutorials and such:

And I like the hands. Interesting to see you contort them into different positions.

Where do you get your inspiration for those you don't draw from life or reference?

EDIT: Okie Dokie. I'll give it a shot. And I'll have a look at that site.

I'm pretty sure that the castle was one of the Crazy Counts. I'll try and find it.

EDIT 2: King Ludwig II of Germany - also known as Mad King Ludwig.

Spent all his gold building 5 absolutely amazing castles. His state ran out of money before the 5th was completed.

He was from Bavaria after all. :)

EDIT 3: I like these. Not as fun as Triple posts though. :(

Very cool find Lenny, I like that view of the castle. My inspiration for the things I don't draw from life or reference? It depends, sometimes I just want to try to get a certain idea down, so I blob color randomly onto a canvas until something I like appears. Imagining what you want to draw and projecting the image in your mind onto the paper before drawing it seems to help a lot too. Usually I start off by looking at an object of some kind, and then I work from that shape and build on new things from there. It's kind of hard to explain.

This 'blind contours' thing looks interesting. I'm probably wrong in saying this, but is it when you don't look at what you're drawing at all? Instead you feel the contours of the person's face (in this case) and draw what you feel?

I agree, the Matte Painting is truly amazing!

And yeah, the Right-side of the brain is responsible for creativity, which is why you find a lot of the more creative people are left-handed -- left-handers are connected to the right side of the brain, and right-handers are connected to the left side.

According to a couple of studies, a persons writing does slant in a direction depending on the hand they write with. Usually lefties would slant slightly towards the right, because of the way we write (especially those who right with the crab-claw method). It'll be interesting to see how Bob writes, he's a leftie too, I think.

But that's all beside the point. The Matte Painting is great. Good job Chruser. :)

By the way, do you use a tablet? I'm getting a summer job to pay for one.

I'll try and do something and post it.

Yay for a one minute photoshop blowup.

He is indeedy. So into it that he's doing Art at college.

I think that some, if not most of his work are things that he's painted or drawn and then scanned in and uploaded.

Though you will find quite a bit that he's done on graphics programs.

I love your pencil sketches. <3

Do you use different pencils for different shades?

Thanks. No, I used a lithography pencil (6B) for all of those sketches. Works great for thin strokes as well as wide ones.

Ah, I use 6B for final lines.

I haven't touched my 9B, though...

Can I ask, is that bread you've painted and put in the basket?

Can I ask, is that bread you've painted and put in the basket?

Indeed it is! I have painted around 35 of them so far, aiming for 100.

Haha! What a strange thing to paint on. Looks good, though.

What started you on painting on bread?

Thanks. Insanity made me do it.

Amazing what six months of practice can do.

I finished this two days ago.

I think I'm going to scan some sketches today or tomorrow, just to revive this thread. :)

A man stops at a busstop, and sees another man with wooden amrs and legs.

"My god!" he exclaims, "Are you alright? That must have been some accident you were in!"

"Accident?" the man with the wooden limbs replies, "These were no accident. Me father were a tree."

---

Which leads me on, quite well, actually, to your fella with a tree for an arm.

It's very good. I particularly like the sketching on the jeans to show folds and subsequent shadows.

I eagerly await your scans.

I remembered seeing Chruser's arm study and figured I'd try and practice that in one of my sketchbook entries.
