Need a good letter salutation

I need to ask one of my father's colleagues a question, but I am having a hard time figuring out how I shall start my letter off. I need a good salutation, but something other than "Dear Mr. ----." Anyone got any suggestions?

What type of person are you asking? An engineer of some sort for example... That would help trigger some salutations if you name the occupation.
