I don't have a very technically extensive knowledge of music ( I can read it, thats about it :)) But this past weekend I was at my friends house who plays the drums and his brother plays bass, and I picked up an electric (not bass), and just started screwing around, and it was really enjoyable. I really wanna learn how to play, so to anyone that knows anythig about guitars.... what guitar should I get?

What I would recommend is getting a CHEAP 6 string electric. You know somethin for like 100-300 bucks. Not too bad. A good started guitar, you don't want a fancy ass, expensive guitar you will get sick of.

Becuase why blow off like 700 bucks and only play your guitar for a month, NOTTA.

Regular ol' 6 string Ibanez here. Cost me 300 back when I was like 13. It's almost time to make the upgrade.

Ibanez is a great guitar, well for learners/medium experienced players. I looked into base, I like to concept more than using a Pick, I use my fingers to play the electric, (odd huh?). But I would recommend saving up for (possibly) a Gibson. My uncle has this sweet ass gibson with a custom paintjob and all, it plays SOOOO Smooth, and so nice. I think I'm gonna ""borrow"" it for a while.

I also recommend buying an amp, (if you get the electric) possibly a shittly little gorilla, (like I used to have) real nice 'n small.

Get STRINGS. Very important, always have some extra strings laying around. Possibly get an electric tuner, I think there like 20 bucks, and you plug your cable into it from your guitar and you can tune it, sweeet little invention.

Also, get a carrying case, or a wall hanger to keep it stored away.

The kind of guitar you should get also depends largely on how serious you are about learning. If you can honestly say your going to be practicing and carrying on with this, then something in the $400 USD price range would probably do you good for a long time. It's never a good idea to buy a relaly expensive guitar starting out, but it can also be counter-productive to buy a really cheap guitar starting out.

As Dev said, strings are definitley important and you should definitley always have spare ones. The nice thing about guitar is the strings are only about a quarter cost of the strings for a 4 string Bass. >=|

For your Amp, you definitley wont need anything big to start out with, but again, if you do intend to follow through, get a good quality starter amp. I believe Marshall has some smaller amps they make which would probably be a good starting point.

I don't know shit about guitars, but most of my friends recommend Ibanez, as many people have already stated. My younger brother is a pretty good guitarist, and I don't think he owns anything but Ibanez guitars.
