Hi there folks. I'm an xbox modder in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Area. I do complete internal and external modification... what does that mean?

well, for the internal part, there's the modchip. What does a modchip do? Basically it allows you to run unsigned code, this boils down to homebrew applications, DVD burns, and such. It will also allow you to play Import video and game DVDs by removing the region coding.

What kinda apps are available?

The most widely used app is called xbox media player. This is a media player for the xbox that will play almost every video/music/picture encode you can think of. It handles avi, mpg, xvid, mp3, mov, wav, jpg, gif, just to name a few. It displays the movie/music directly to your TV... no more watching AVIs on ur computer screen or having to use a TV out card, just transfer them to the xbox HDD and play them from the xbox (you can also stream movies and music to the xbox from your computer using a program called ReLaX)

Emulators are available too... for almost anything. There is a strong emulation scene on the xbox and emulators have been created for everything from atari 2600 and sega SC3000 to Playstation 1 and N64. The only main systems that haven't been emulated so far are dreamcast and playstation 2.

As for external modifications, I do lots of paint jobs and LED mods. My price list is as follows:

Modchip install: $30 -- You supply the chip (Or I can order it for you for extra $$)

This includes a HDD upgrade with any HDD you supply. The HDD will be installed with many popular applications and emulators. A list of current apps on the list is available by request and I can add anything you don't see on the list that you would want.

I'm a firm believer that even with 7200 RPM drives the operating temperatures of the xbox are safe. If you would like me to install a fan for cooling purposes I can do that too.

80mm Fan upgrade: $3 you supply the fan, or I can order it for you

fans will be ordered from www.xoxide.com here is a list of the fans that they have available:

www.xoxide.com

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Case mods -

One color paint job: $20
Two Color paint job: $30
Painted Controller: $15 you supply controller

Pictures of my paint work will be located at the end of this post

LED mods are available in the following colors: Blue, Orange, Amber, Green, Ultraviolet, Red, and White.

HDD activity LED: $5

Controller LED: $3 (Pictured below in green)

Controller port LEDs: $12 (these LEDs will light up when a controller is plugged into a port. this does not use the Yellow wire and therefore allows light gun usage)

Clear Xbox Case Jewel: $5

Xbox Jewel LED halo: $7

Xbox Jewel Cathode: $2 + cost of cathode (VERY VERY BRIGHT)

cathodes can be ordered from http://www.xoxide.com/lightedgrills.html

Front Eject Halo LED swap (One color): $5
Front Eject Halo LED swap (two colors): $7

If you want any other kind of LED or case mod then let me know, I can probably do it.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chip installs can be done either in the comfort of your own home or mine. I am willing to travel to most destinations in the Dallas area and inbetween Denton and Dallas. Gas charges do apply if I am traveling to your house, but it usually isn't any more than 10-15 dollars. All I charge for gas is the going rate for a gallon multiplied by how many gallons my truck used to get there and back (my truck gets about 15 mpg).

I will also accept mail in xboxs, I have done 2 or 3 xboxs in this manner and all have worked out well.

If your xbox is broken from a bad install, let me know. There's a possibility I can fix it, and if I can't, I can give you some money for a new one, or credit towards a pre-mod. Contact me and we'll work something out.

and exploiting battle.net servers isn't?

please don't be a hypocrite.

There is a fine line between what is and what isn't illegal and truthfully, everything I do to xboxs is legal in my mind.

I don't give out games, all I'm doing is selling a service that installs a tool. The person can use this tool however they feel. It's just like a CD burner... people can buy them and use them for legit purposes, but there are some that use them to copy CDs, games, movies, etc. The manufacturers of the Burners aren't held liable because the end user is responsible for his/her own actions.

Everything I install to the HDD is a homebrew application. NO GAMES, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. If the end user wants that, it is his/her decision.

This is a perfectly acceptable post, and since I am the xbox moderator on zelaron, I hereby endow this thread with stickiness!

It's by far Illegal.

Shockwave, shut the fuck up. You have no idea what you're talking about.

Modding your xbox is 100% legal. What's flashed on the mod chip, and what you plan to do with it, is where legality issues come into place.

I've done it myself, and I like my xbox a whole lot now.

It's not in any way illegal to mod your systems, all it does is void the warranty.

here... I'll enlighten everyone, including shockwave.

Installing a current modchip is 100% legal. Current chips come flashed with what is known as a FlashBIOS, it is 100% free of microsoft code, and on its own can not be used to do anything except load a linux operating system onto the xbox.

Where it starts to become illegal is when you flash that chip with a modded bios. The most popular bios right now is the xecuter 2 4977 or 4978.03 bios. This bios DOES contain Microsoft code and therefore is illegal due to copyright infringement, but this is very minor because anything can be reverse engineered for the sake of learning from it... ANYTHING.

Next there are the applications. Many applications were written completely free of microsoft code and without using the XDK (xbox development kit). These apps themselves are legal and being able to run them is a good thing. The other apps that were made with the XDK could most likely be considered as illegal (since the XDK it was made with was most likely a pirated version) but there are several people with actual Xbox Dev kits and the PC software that comes with it that are developing software for the xbox.. all these people have paid microsoft for their software/hardware and are handing programs out for free. These programs are legal.

so what are we left with.. just how illegal is it to install a modchip and actually use it? not very, if M$ wanted to come after you they'd have very little ground to stand on since:

A) They steal code on a regular basis
B) You're using freely distributed applications that the authors have made themselves available to the public

Now... when does it get downright illegal? When you steal games. When you pirate them so you don't have to pay for them, then that is beyond a doubt illegal. Any judge/jury in the world can see that.

So why do I even mention you can play backups?

1) cause I don't want 10 emails a day from people asking if it plays backups

2) because there are actual legitimate people out there that use this to back up their games so they don't get scratched and then they don't even have to take the games to their friends house to play them.. just take the xbox. They're called hard-core collectors.

There... now you know my position, I'd appreciate it if you would stop saying this is illegal, I know just how illegal it is, and I'm willing to accept the consequences if a case is brought against me. I'm really not afraid of it cause I don't advocate piracy.

now, if anyone happens to have any friends that want their systems modded, let them know about me. I'm starting a referral program where the referrer gets $5 after the install is paid for and possibly more if the person referred to me has anything else done besides just a chip install.

He did good paintjobs. But how did ya paint over the origional colors?

byrdclaw
2003-10-18, 06:49 PM
The xbox is just plastic. The painting involves taking the xbox completely apart, cleaning the case of all dust and oil, then spraying paint on it. That's the simple explination.

If you want any of this done to your xbox you can contact me at [email protected] or [email protected]

im not gonna lie to you byrdclaw... that is some tight shit you are doing. Too bad i dont own an x-box lol. u do anything like that for ps2?

byrdclaw
2003-10-18, 07:55 PM
I know of a local guy that can chip the PS2, and I can do the painting, it wouldn't be cheap though. The chips for PS2 alone can run 65 - 75 dollars for the top of the line chip, the install is over 50 dollars because of the difficulty of it. Add to that paint/LED mods if you want them and shipping and you're looking at a VERY hefty price tag. But, it's well worth it in my opinion if you want a unique console that stands out from the rest.

i see, well i think i have the money, but i am torn whether to spend it on that... or save up for my 20's for the new f-150 : /

wow, that sounds difficult, how long does it usualy take you (sry if u already said that and i missed it)

byrdclaw
2003-11-01, 07:49 PM
for just a chip install it only takes me an hour or so depending upon the chip, I can conceivably have an xbox shipped back to you the same day I receive it. For painting it can take up to 4 days depending on the complexity of the paintjob. Paint takes a long time to dry if you want it done right. other things like LED mods and case mods are dependant on what is being done.
