View Full Version : Nooby in 3D art, a LW qustion
LoL, how do I create a new layer in LW 7.0? I looked and looked all over this proggy. It is most likely in my face but I cant see it lol.

using the modeler, look at the top right corner, you will see boxes split in half going vertically(i think), click on them to make new layers...
i think this is how it is done, but chruser should come along, chruser is the master in LW
Yeah I see lots of boxes that are divided by a line going from the bottom left to the top right. I will mess with it.
yah clik the next one and so on.. then you shall make a new layer. i think...
I wonder if Zelaron is not home, he hasnt answered my IM so I can get this question settled :P. I havent seen him post lately too. Odd
Chruser
2003-02-15, 03:36 AM
Well, I'm here, and I believe I gave you a detailed answer in an IM. Oh yes, maybe I should set up a place for basic questions.
Yeah, and thanks... it was helped me a lot. Im able to actually do stuff now :)

You can't make new layers... there are only a certain ammount of layers you're given and you can only work with those layers
badboy
2003-02-17, 01:21 AM
i am way out of my league
Chruser
2003-02-18, 02:39 PM
Randuin, I assume you think infinity is a "certain number", then?
I am sorry to get alittle off-topic, but badboy you have gotten off-topic on most of my threads, please dont post things like that, thanks...
I found out how to work with layers thanks to Chruser.
Randuin
2003-02-18, 04:28 PM
chruser... yes it is in fact a certain number :D
I certain undefined number... so there isnt a limit to layers? you just keep hitting over?
Randuin
2003-02-18, 05:34 PM
i dunno :D i suck with LW... better with maya houdini and 3dsmax
Once i format i will try out those other progs and see what is up.
Randuin
2003-02-18, 06:39 PM
you should because then you'll see how much lightwave sux
LoL, I dont even know lightwave enough to know that is is/isn't. I am such a noob at this.
Randuin
2003-02-19, 04:22 PM
trust me... it sux :D just try maya and you'll be like... wha... why was i even using lightwave?!
I have heard that the best thing to do was to learn 3DMax, then LW, then Maya.... they said it is the best way to understand how those programs work.
Randuin
2003-02-19, 06:23 PM
nah... just try 3dsmax and go to maya... LW... not much similiarities no point going to it
Should I even go to Max? or just go to maya?
Randuin
2003-02-20, 04:23 PM
well if you can sit your ass down and learn go right ahead to maya i say
Yeah I had maya the whole time and didnt know it, it was just hinding in my comp :P. I been working with LW still and I finally understand how models are made and the process, this is a great thing for me since that is the most important thing in modeling.
Randuin
2003-02-20, 10:38 PM
i dunno i just can't get used to LW :) i need to i guess... me need handles... lol
It has been more simple that I thought it would be, as I showed you, I am able to make a face.... and that is just that outline, I will be working on the detail soon.
Randuin
2003-02-21, 08:41 AM
nod, try to work with some reference... makes your life a HELL a lot easy
Reference, what do you mean by that?
Randuin
2003-02-21, 05:11 PM
like a picture to work from not from your imagination
I need things like since I dont know how the body works, once i get use to it... I shouldnt really need them. I been makeing all my designs from my head so far tho.
Randuin
2003-02-21, 06:32 PM
well you should consider drawing your concept soon :) easier to model organically and well actually easier to model anything :)
I do once in while, I dont use them, but i do "try" to draw, I just have a problem to where, if I didnt make it look just right I will erase it or quite :P
Randuin
2003-02-21, 08:11 PM
well with any 3d program you can have your reference picture as your viewport background and i don't think you need me to tell you how useful that can be :0
I found some site, didnt get to bookmark it :(. It should how to model the body by looking at pics and such... very very good I been searching for it again.
Randuin
2003-02-21, 09:08 PM
there are LOTs of tutorials like that :D
If you know some, could you link me to them? Also I need to ask Chruser for some Video Tuts on LW... that would be nice to have.
Randuin
2003-02-21, 10:14 PM
i dono't think there are much video tuts on LW out there... the ones that i know you have to pay
hmmm, I seen some made in flash, they would nice... I hope there are some free ones
Randuin
2003-02-21, 10:22 PM
flash? those are well... i dunno i don't like em :D
It wasnt the gresting thing, but it helped me see how things were done. I say if someone just recorded themself working on a big project... wouldnt even have to be a tut. That would help a lot.
Randuin
2003-02-21, 10:32 PM
well i can probly record myself do things =\ i dunno... but i'd have to get my thoughts together really well... because i often think alot during modelling and no one likes to watch the mouse not move :D
I do same thing, how could I record myself? like record my screen, is there a prog for it?
Randuin
2003-02-21, 10:44 PM
www.camtasia.com
it's recorder and blah all in one... but you have to buy it... there is an evaluation version tho
Thanks, I will try it out, would it work while running games?
Randuin
2003-02-22, 01:42 AM
probably... it worked while i was playing AVIs and stuf... so it probly will work :D
nice, I was thinking of starting Tuts Vids for noobs at games. It wouldnt be hard since I wouldnt have to write anything ;)
Randuin
2003-02-22, 10:52 AM
games? omg ppl need tutorials to play games? that is just the saddest thing i've ever heard
Well what i mean is like when you get online and there are all these things you need to know, they can be learned in 5mins or less.
Randuin
2003-02-22, 10:58 AM
ah... that is still kinda stupid if they can't play a game in the beginning they won't ever be good :D
lol, well it was main thought was to record demos so I can show my friends stuff that I dont want to explain over the phone.
Randuin
2003-02-22, 11:01 AM
i c.. well have fun with camtasia... i gotta go and work on my head now :)
I will, and good luck... it is comeing out very nicely
Randuin
2003-02-22, 11:03 AM
is it? i just hope you're not having problems with the recording area thingy
Yeah you Eye is looking really nice. I havent tried out the recording thing 'yet', I am about for Format soon.
Randuin
2003-02-22, 11:39 AM
i can probly make a video tutorial on how i made the eye :D
really? if you dont mind I just like to see how you made the shape and such, or just record you working on it now, so I can see how you do things, if not that is cool
Randuin
2003-02-22, 02:22 PM
oh it's okay when i find time i'll record it :) with audio :)
ooooohh, Audio :) yeah thanks, that would help me. If I can see how modelers work, it could help me a lot... I did that blood cell tut and I keep trying to read it to fast and was makeing small errors... I need to slow down.
Randuin
2003-02-22, 04:04 PM
ya one thing i hate a tuts is that there are hardly ANY tutorials that tells you STEP BY STEP :D you know they always miss something ;)
yep, so for people who are new, that really messes things up. atleast with a video you can see what the person is doing, so you cant miss it :)
Randuin
2003-02-22, 06:07 PM
ya and i just release the eye video tutorial :) hope you like it... hehe
yeah I seen it, but as you know I think I need to update DivX
Randuin
2003-02-22, 06:21 PM
did you update divx? and they work afterwards?
I upgraded, but now I have to restart.... so I will try when I do :)
Randuin
2003-02-22, 09:23 PM
ya after you upgrade it should work :)
It did, and it work :) I seen the maya ones... I plan to install maya 4.5 soon
Randuin
2003-02-23, 07:39 PM
you should :) maya is one of those extremely good animating programs, you could probably model your models in LW and then import them into maya and rig/animate them
Yeah Chruser was saying that some maya work was modeled in LW.
Randuin
2003-02-24, 04:44 PM
ya because maya's fluid and cloth is really powerful :) you should see REF, it's made by pazur it's an AMAZING short completely made in LW
What book should I get for Maya? The same aurthor(sc) that wrote the LW book I am going to get?
PS: (sc) means spellcheck
Randuin
2003-02-24, 05:35 PM
dan ablan never wrote a book for maya =\ hell no he's only LW man :D
Ahh :( I guess I will have to find a greatly known/good book for maya.
Randuin
2003-02-24, 06:23 PM
well i dunno... try going to a 3d school for it... they explain the software WAYYYYYYYY better than a book :D and ya i'm really looking forward to my 3k dollar summer maya program :D
I have only seen schools for 3Dsmax around here :(
Randuin
2003-02-24, 08:42 PM
hahaha most of my schools here teach maya + XSI :D
no way, that is not fair :P My highschool only teaches VB, C++ and Java. And I toke C++ and still dont know much about it :(
Randuin
2003-02-24, 09:03 PM
oh it's not my high school :D it's extra 3d schools... lol
I know, but my highschool is the closest school to teach me stuff. That 3D school is so far :p
Randuin
2003-02-25, 12:24 AM
rofl i have like a 3d school 3 blocks away :)
Lucky You! I moved to PA(USA) for a month, and I was 20mins away from a 3D School. Then I moved back :p
Randuin
2003-02-25, 07:49 AM
lol why didn't you go to some crappy 1 month intensive course there? :D
It is a school, so it has semesters.
Randuin
2003-02-25, 04:38 PM
so i have seem schools offer part time courses... at least the 3 schools within 20 mins drive of me do :)
I will see if they have those here, I would like one.
Randuin
2003-02-25, 06:44 PM
all school should have it :) just ask around :D you'll get your answer
Yep, I surely will, I really want to focus in Computer Graphic Programming too.
Randuin
2003-02-25, 10:56 PM
i have an ebook on directx gfx programming
I was into DirectX, but I dont like it. OpenGL is my thing.
Randuin
2003-02-26, 03:25 PM
directX is still widely used, it's good to have both
Yeah, I just never likes it, Vodoo's run well with DirectX too, right?
Randuin
2003-02-27, 04:28 PM
i'm pretty sure everything runs well with directX :) but a crappy thing about it is that... it splits every polygon into two... make them triangles
everything does, but i just think openGL is faster.
Randuin
2003-02-27, 08:00 PM
i did say directX split every polygon into triangles, more polygons = slower render time
yeah, but directX does work well with Glide and Windows to make up for that in a small way.
Randuin
2003-02-28, 09:55 PM
well it'll be only a matter of time before linux take over the OS world! :D
yep, then it will be OpenGL, since DX wont work with linux
