I'm thinking of upgrading my processor, because my AMD Athalon 1.4GHz just isn't cutting the mustard at the moment... I have an ECS K7S5A mobo. What XP processor would you reccomend getting? Which would be the best upgrade for the price? I'm looking to be able to play Doom III and UT2K3 without any lag (my video card is good, thank you Radeon 9700! :)) Anyways, which processor would you reccomend? Or, would you reccomend a new mobo & processor? Hmm... tell me your opinion.

processors.... hmm... i suggest athlon 2600 xp, or the 2800 xp when it comes out. or you could just get a p4 3ghz which is out right now, and be the king of the world.

I had a P4 2.4GHz for awhile, and it crashed alot (I had more than enough cooling for it) and I had no hardware conflicts or anything... I've had back luck with them, so, I'll stick with my Athalons... ^_^ Or, I could get a G4 dual 1.25GHz Mac! Woot! ;)

1. 9700 Pro won't cut it for Doom 3, max details with full DX 9.0
You get 60 fps in 800x600... unless they make some severe changes from the alpha. You're fine for UT2k3 though. You're gonna need at least GeForce FX or whatever ATI pulls out next for Doom 3, which is fine cause it won't be out for another year anyway.
If you want affordable and useful proc right now, about the 2000+ to 2200+ range is right before the prices get up there. That will tide you over until next year when you can get a real upgrade with the new video card (if you REALLY want that detail on Doom 3). But by then you'll also need a new mobo, not to mention new memory that can handle the timings need for DDR400. That's only if you want to keep ahead of the game... I'm still using a 1 Ghz Athlon, which works fine for everything cept UT2k3 *cries*

:points and laughs: Well, I'm going to have to hit daddy up for money for a new computer "for school"... hehe (I love having a computer illiterate father) It's mean that I take advantage of him, yet, mean people succeed. That's my motto. :)

Is there ever a computer expo around you? Processors are a dime a dozen there. I've paid $40 for 2.0 athlon. Anyways, maybe run dual processors? You'll never complain then, unless you try to render and the processors phase out......

what good would dual processors do? You need mutli-threaded apps to make use of it, otherwise it actually amounts to 2-5% SLOWER processing, since it has to go through the extra step of deciding which processor to send the instruction to. There are mutli-threaded apps out there, but most cost no less than $5k. On a standard PC, noone is going to make use of dual processors

argh, i know, only good use from what i under stand is CAD, 3d rendering, and servers. But it still sounds nice.....
